His testing was thorough enough that the enquiry reads like a completed report. A 2TB SATA boot drive that "decided to not be recognised at start-up a few days ago. It gives an error that says restart with boot disk. The HDD does not show in the BIOS either. Have checked cables and replaced the SATA cable. Have then tried putting the HDD in another PC as a slave, but it does not see it and it is not seen in the BIOS. I have also checked Disk Management — nothing listed as a second drive. Two observations do the diagnostic work here, and one of them is more decisive than most owners realise: absence from the BIOS is the lowest-level verdict a computer can give — and it means something quite specific about where the fault lives.

The decode: why the BIOS matters most, and what spinning rules out

Why absence from the BIOS is definitive: the BIOS check happens before any operating system, driver or utility exists. It is the machine's firmware asking connected drives a single, simple question — who are you? — and listing whatever answers. A drive that appears there but fails in Windows has a software or filesystem problem. A drive that does not appear there at all has failed to answer the most basic question it will ever be asked, and no amount of operating-system-level troubleshooting can change that. This is why his observation outranks everything else he checked: Disk Management, drive letters, partitions and filesystems are all irrelevant when the firmware never saw a device. It also means the widely-suggested fixes for missing drives — reassigning letters, initialising, running repair tools — cannot possibly apply.

What his second machine proved: installing the drive in another PC as a slave and finding it equally invisible there is the elimination that closes the case. It rules out his motherboard, the SATA port, the boot configuration and the original machine's firmware. Combined with the replaced cable, everything outside the drive has now been tested. The fault travelled with the drive, definitively.

What the spinning rules out — and what it doesn't: audible rotation confirms two things and no more: the drive is receiving power, and its motor works. That is genuinely useful, because it eliminates the dead-board and dead-supply scenarios. What it cannot tell him is whether the drive completed the rest of its start-up, because everything after spin-up is silent. The heads must perform calibration seeks, and the controller must read the service area — the reserved region holding its firmware modules, translation tables and adaptive parameters. If either fails, the drive never reaches the point of identifying itself, and the BIOS reports nothing while the platters turn quietly beneath. Spinning plus BIOS-invisible is therefore not a contradiction; it is the signature of a drive that started and could not finish.

Why that is workable: both remaining causes are ordinary professional work, and neither touches what is written on the platters. Service-area faults are addressed through the manufacturer's technological modes — the reserved regions read directly, damaged modules repaired or regenerated until the drive will identify itself and address its media. Head-calibration failures are met at the mechanism. In both cases the discipline afterwards is fixed: the moment the drive answers, it is imaged completely, and everything else happens on the copy.

On the bench

Then stop powering it: each attempt is another round of failed calibration seeks over your data. Don't freeze it or tap it, and don't buy a donor board hoping.
