Her enquiry described a decline rather than a failure, and the sequence is the diagnosis. A Buffalo external hard drive of about seven years: "it has suddenly stopped working. It first was taking a long time to come up, and after a while would disappear, and now the light is on but it is not coming up at all." It had been tried across her own PC, her husband's, and a Mac. And the reason it matters: "we have about seven years of our lives on it, from the births of our sons up to now." She asked, practically, where and when to bring it in. Three stages, three meanings — and they describe one continuous process rather than three separate faults. Reading them in order tells us what the drive has been doing, and it also explains why moving it between computers made things slightly worse rather than better.

The decode: three stages of one decline

Stage one — slow to come up. The most commonly ignored warning in storage, and the most useful. A drive that takes a long time to appear is retrying reads internally: it asks for data, does not get a clean answer, and asks again — hardware-level retries measured in seconds where microseconds belong. Nothing on the outside looks broken, so people wait a little longer each time and carry on. That stage is the drive telling you, politely, that its surfaces or its heads have started to struggle, and it is the moment when copying everything off would have cost nothing.

Stage two — appearing, then disappearing. The retries have grown long enough that the drive stalls, and the computer — which will only wait so long for a device to answer — drops it off the bus. That is why it seems to vanish mid-use. Each of those episodes is a full workout across the weakening regions, and the drive comes back afterwards a fraction less capable than it went in.

Stage three — light on, nothing else. The drive can no longer complete the start-up sequence it needs before it can announce itself: calibration seeks and reading its own service area both happen silently, and failure at either means the computer sees nothing. The light, as this archive keeps pointing out, belongs to the enclosure's board and reports only that power arrived.

Why the three computers cost her something: said gently, because it is the natural response and almost everyone does it. Trying a failing drive on another machine is excellent practice when a drive is silent — it eliminates the host. But when a drive is degrading, each additional attempt is another set of retries over the weakest regions, and three machines means three more sessions spent. The elimination she was performing had already been answered by the pattern itself: a fault that follows the drive across three computers is in the drive.

What that means for her photographs: the encouraging part. None of the three stages describes data being erased. They describe a drive becoming progressively less able to deliver what is written on it. Recovery inverts the drive's own priorities: one hardware-managed pass, healthy regions captured first and completely, weak neighbourhoods approached last under tight timeouts, and everything read from the image afterwards. Drop-off in person is genuinely the best way to move a drive in this condition, and it was arranged.

On the bench

The drive was removed from its enclosure and assessed on a native connection, which took the bridge board out of the question, and the Atola Insight Forensic read directly what the three stages had implied: head condition, surface behaviour, and the point in the start-up sequence at which progress stopped. Imaging ran on the PC-3000 Express under Data Extractor with the sweep prioritised — the healthy expanse first and completely, the struggling regions revisited last on their own passes so they could never stall the rescue. The volume was rebuilt from the completed image and the photographs validated by rendering rather than counted, then delivered on fresh media, ordered by date, with seven years intact.

The outcome

The family archive imaged under managed control and delivered validated. Free assessment, one fixed written figure including VAT; where a drive has to be opened, 50% of parts and labour is payable upfront with the balance only on success — otherwise no recovery, no fee. The sequence, written down so that others recognise it earlier: slow to appear means a drive is retrying failing reads, and it is the moment to copy everything off; appearing and vanishing means those retries now exceed what the computer will wait for, and each episode spends the drive further; a light with nothing behind it means the drive can no longer complete its own start-up. None of those stages erases anything — they describe a drive losing the ability to deliver what it still holds.

Drive that got slower, then started vanishing, and now shows nothing

Recognise that as one decline rather than three problems, and stop the attempts now. A drive that takes a long time to appear is retrying reads it can't complete cleanly; one that appears and then disappears is stalling for longer than your computer will wait; and one that shows only a light has stopped completing its start-up. Each stage follows the last, and each access attempt spends what margin is left — which is why trying it on a second and third computer costs you rather than helping once the pattern has followed the drive everywhere. Don't run repair utilities, don't leave it plugged in hoping it appears, and don't shake or freeze it. If you can bring it in person rather than posting it, do — a degrading drive travels better in a car than in a courier's van. And take heart: none of this erases anything, it just makes the drive less able to hand over what it still holds.
