We routinely recover disks that have been running for a decade or more. The age of a disk has little to do with its ability to be recovered; it’s just about where the fault lies. Older disks are also often easier to work on than newer ones, as they are mechanically simpler.
Please do not try to open up your disk yourself. Dust particles can get inside of the disk when you attempt to remove the lid and the high-speed spinning of the disks at 7,200 rpm can cause this dust to become embedded into the surface of the disks and potentially destroy them, turning a recoverable disk into an unrecoverable one.
