His enquiry did the testing properly and then asked the right question in slightly the wrong terms — which is worth unpicking, because the distinction decides what he should be buying. The facts: "my external hard drive has stopped showing up on my desktop when I plug it in, so I have no access to it. I have tried with different leads and on different computers but no luck." Then: "let me know what the next step is to getting the hard drive repaired or the data recovered." Both halves of that sentence are reasonable, and they are not the same job — they have different aims, different prices, and, crucially, a different order. The decode: what his testing proved, and why the order matters

The elimination, banked: different leads rule out a broken cable — the single most common and most trivial cause of a vanished external drive. Different computers rule out a failed port, a driver problem, and a host-specific fault. What remains is the drive and its enclosure, which is a genuinely useful narrowing and saves the assessment its first stage. He has done, unprompted, exactly the two tests worth doing at home — and the correct instruction now is to stop, because everything beyond those two tests requires equipment rather than repetition.

Two suspects left, one benign: the fault is either in the enclosure's bridge board — the small adapter presenting the drive over USB, which fails often and takes nothing with it — or in the drive itself, either its electronics or its start-up sequence. Those are separated by a single test that must be done on a native connection rather than through another dock: the drive out of its case, brought up directly. If it presents, the enclosure was the whole problem and this is a very good day. If it stays silent, the answer is inside the drive, and it is still ordinary professional work.

Repair and recovery are not the same purchase: here is the distinction his phrasing invites. Repairing a drive means restoring the device to working order — and it is almost never the right goal when the data matters, for two reasons. First, a repaired drive is a drive whose failure you have just proved; nobody should trust the only copy of anything to it afterwards. Second, and more seriously, the techniques that make a drive usable again are not the techniques that make it readable once: repair thinking tolerates writes, retries and reformats that a recovery would never permit. Recovering the data means getting a complete image off the drive with the fewest possible demands on it, and then doing everything else to the copy. On a drive holding an only copy, the sequence is fixed: recover first, verified onto separate media — and then repair, replace or bin the hardware with nothing at stake.

The two remaining suspects were separated at the door: the drive came out of its enclosure and was brought up on a native connection, removing the bridge from the conversation entirely, with the Atola Insight Forensic reading its power-on behaviour directly rather than through an adapter's silence. What's left is the enclosure's bridge board or the drive itself, and separating them needs the drive brought up on a native connection, not another dock. Be careful how you frame what you want next: if the data matters, don't ask for the drive to be repaired. Repair aims at a working device and permits writes, reformats and retries; recovery aims at one complete image with the fewest possible demands on a failing mechanism. Get the data off first, verified, onto separate media — then decide whether the hardware is worth anything. And never put your only copy back onto a drive that has already failed once.
