External Hard Drive Not Showing Up on Mac: No Noise at All
Her enquiry was precise about an absence, which is harder to describe than a symptom. An external drive used as storage alongside her MacBook: "when I plug it in, it seems unresponsive — no noise, no connection, no recognition. I have a lot of photographs stored on there which I would like to recover." Three negatives, and together they describe something quite different from the clicking, beeping and grinding drives elsewhere in this archive. Total silence means nothing is spinning — and a drive that is not spinning is, for the moment, a drive that is not damaging itself. That makes this one of the few faults in the archive where the immediate danger is low, and it narrows the cause to a short list, most of which have nothing to do with the disk inside.

The decode: what silence rules out, and the short list it leaves
Why silence is the hopeful symptom: almost every urgent instruction in this archive exists because a running drive can damage itself — heads contacting platters, mechanisms grinding, surfaces scoring while the owner tries one more cable. A drive that makes no sound at all is doing none of that. Nothing is turning, nothing is in contact, and the platters are exactly as they were. That does not mean the fault is trivial, but it does mean the clock is not running in the way it is for a noisy drive, and it is worth knowing before panic sets in.
What silence rules out: if the motor were spinning and the drive simply failing to present, she would hear it — the familiar background whirr. Its absence means the mechanism is not receiving working power or is not being told to start. That removes calibration failures, service-area faults and head problems from the immediate suspect list, because all of those happen after a drive spins up.
The short list it leaves: three candidates, in order of hopefulness. Power delivery — most portable drives are bus-powered, drawing their supply through the same cable that carries data, and a marginal cable, a worn socket, a low-powered port or a hub can leave a drive with enough voltage to do nothing and not enough to spin. This is worth eliminating properly, and it is free: a different cable, a port directly on the machine rather than through a hub or a display, and ideally a second computer. The enclosure board — the small board inside the case that takes power and converts the connection, whose protective components are designed to fail first and often do. The drive's own electronics — a fault on the drive's circuit board, which is board-level work and, importantly, does not touch the platters. All three leave the data untouched.
What to check on a Mac specifically: since Finder only shows mounted volumes, the meaningful check is System Information's USB section, which lists devices whether or not they carry a usable disk. A drive that appears there is at least partly alive; one that appears nowhere at any level is consistent with the power-side story above. That check takes a minute and costs nothing.
On the bench
The power path was walked in stages rather than assumed, on a correct-specification supply — the cable and port questions eliminated first, then the enclosure's board, then the drive itself on a native connection with the case removed from the equation entirely. The Atola Insight Forensic read the drive's power-on current signature directly, which distinguishes a drive receiving no power from one receiving it and declining to start — a distinction impossible to make from outside a sealed enclosure. With the failing stage identified and the drive answering, imaging ran immediately on the PC-3000 Express under Data Extractor, and her photographs were validated by rendering before delivery on fresh media.
The outcome

Drive that does nothing at all when plugged in
Take some comfort first: complete silence means nothing is spinning, so unlike a clicking or grinding drive, yours isn't damaging itself while you work out what to do. Then eliminate the cheap causes properly, because they're common with bus-powered portables. Try a different cable — including a known-good one rather than another spare of the same age. Plug directly into the computer rather than through a hub, a monitor or a keyboard, since those often can't supply enough power to spin a drive. Try a second computer. On a Mac, check System Information's USB section rather than relying on Finder, which only shows volumes that mounted successfully. If nothing appears anywhere at any level, the fault is in the power path, the enclosure board or the drive's own electronics — all of which leave your data untouched, and none of which are fixed by trying again harder.
