His enquiry was four short lines and every one of them carries weight. A Seagate 4TB external desktop drive pulled off and onto the floor: "not seen by Mac. Unhealthy noise with power." The decode: the physics of a desktop drive, and what the noise settles
Why size makes it worse: a desktop external contains a 3.5-inch mechanism — larger platters, more of them, a heavier spindle assembly and a longer actuator arm than the 2.5-inch drive inside a portable. In a fall, the energy delivered to internal components scales with mass, and the larger, heavier assembly has more momentum to dissipate when the case stops abruptly. Portable drives are also designed with the expectation of being carried and knocked, and many include shock accommodation; desktop drives are designed to sit still on a desk and are built accordingly. So the same drop that a portable often shrugs off can damage heads, distort an actuator, or shift a platter in a desktop unit. His drive is in the more fragile category, and that is worth knowing rather than discovering.
The question that decides most of it: was it powered when it fell? A drive that is switched off has its heads parked safely away from the data surfaces, and a fall in that state is often survivable with no data damage whatsoever. A drive that is running has its heads flying nanometres above spinning platters, and an impact can slam them into the surface — scoring tracks, damaging the heads and scattering debris. What the noise means: "unhealthy" is a fair description and a precise diagnosis is not needed to act. Any abnormal sound after an impact — clicking, buzzing, grinding, scraping, a repeated attempt-and-stop — means the mechanism is not operating as designed. Grinding or scraping is the most serious, because it indicates contact with the platter surface and destroys data continuously while the drive runs. Clicking means the heads are attempting and failing to work. Either way the response is the same and it is not negotiable: no more power.
