Drive Won't Start: Posting It Safely for Recovery
Her enquiry asked four things and one of them almost never gets answered properly. A 4TB Seagate drive with family photographs: "crashed. Can you recover the photos? It doesn't start and doesn't read. Where are you located? What would be the cost?" The technical questions are answered below. But the logistical one deserves more than an address, because a drive that has already failed mechanically can be made substantially worse by its journey — and the packing decisions that prevent that are simple, free, and almost universally got wrong. A drive posted loose in a padded envelope arrives in a different condition from one packed properly, and on a mechanism that is already compromised, that difference shows up in the recovery.

The decode: what "doesn't start" means, and how to send it
What her symptom narrows to: a drive that does not start and does not read has failed before the point of communicating anything, and there are four candidates. The power path — supply, cable or connector — which is the cheapest and is checked first. The enclosure or drive board, whose protective components are designed to fail before anything expensive does. A seized spindle, where the bearings will not turn. Or adhered heads, resting on a platter and holding the stack still. Two of those need no opening; two do. Which applies is established free of charge, and it decides both the route and the price — which is why an honest indicative range can be offered from her description, but the binding figure follows the assessment.
Why the journey matters more than usual: a healthy drive is reasonably robust in transit. A drive with adhered heads or a damaged mechanism is not. Shock in transit can convert heads resting on a surface into heads dragged across it, can complete a partial disconnection inside the assembly, and can turn a recoverable fault into a scored platter. Couriers are not gentle, and packages are dropped, stacked and thrown as a matter of routine — that is simply the reality of the system, not a criticism of it.
How to pack it properly: the rules are short. Wrap the drive in anti-static material first — a bag if you have one, otherwise nothing that generates static; never bubble wrap directly against a bare circuit board. Then surround it with at least a few centimetres of cushioning on every side, including top and bottom, so the drive floats in the middle of the box rather than resting against any wall. Use a rigid box, never a padded envelope: an envelope transmits every impact directly. Fill all voids so the drive cannot shift — movement inside a box is what does the damage. Keep the drive in the orientation it normally sits in and mark that on the outside. Include a note with your name, contact details and a short history: what happened, what sounds it makes, whether it was dropped, and how many times it has been connected since. And send the drive alone — not the enclosure's power supply, not cables, unless specifically asked, since loose accessories become projectiles.
What not to do before sending: do not put it in a freezer, do not tap it, do not shake it to hear whether something is loose, and do not open it. And do not connect it once more to check before packing — if it has already failed to start, the answer will not have changed, and each attempt spends margin the recovery needs. If you can bring it in person, do: a drive travels far better in a car than in a courier network, and it removes the journey from the equation entirely.
On the bench
The drive was assessed on a correct-specification supply and a native connection, with the enclosure taken out of the question — since a dead enclosure board is both a common cause and the cheapest outcome.
