Her enquiry contained an observation most people never make, and a question most people are too polite to ask. The drive holds her family photographs — "it's not appearing on folders when I open it up on my computer, and I've changed the cable and the computer and still nothing. It's however making noise as usual when it's plugged in, but it's not being detected anywhere except for in devices." Then, directly: "I was just wondering if I could get a quote for this, and whether you still charge if it's not recoverable?" She asked for a reply by email, which was honoured. Her technical observation does real diagnostic work, and her commercial question deserves answering first, plainly and near the top, because it is the thing she actually needs to know before anything else: no — if the data cannot be recovered, there is nothing to pay. The detail of how that works is below, along with what her three findings mean together.

The decode: her question answered, and what the three findings mean
The charging question, in full: the assessment is free — the drive is examined, the fault identified, and the realistic outcome stated, with nothing owed whatever the answer. If a recovery is possible, one fixed figure is put in writing before any work begins, including VAT, and it does not move afterwards. On work that does not involve opening the drive, nothing at all is payable unless the data comes back. Where a drive must be opened — as this one may — a matched donor is bought and consumed whether or not the job succeeds, so the honest structure is 50% of parts and labour upfront with the balance due only on successful recovery. That is the complete answer: she can find out what is wrong without spending anything, and she will know the figure and the terms before committing.
What "detected in devices but not as a disk" means: her most useful sentence. Her computer is seeing the enclosure — the small bridge board inside the case that converts the drive's native connection to USB — which is powered, working, and announcing itself. What it is not seeing is a disk, because the drive behind that bridge has not reached the state where it can report itself ready. So the split localises the fault precisely: everything outside the drive is working, and the drive itself is not completing its start-up.
Why "making noise as usual" narrows it further: normal running sound means the motor is turning the platters at speed, which rules out the seized spindles and stuck heads that produce beeping or silence. But spin-up is only the first act. After it, the heads must unpark and calibrate against the servo patterns, and the controller must read the drive's service area — the reserved region holding its firmware modules and translation tables. Both happen silently. A drive that sounds entirely healthy and never presents has failed at one of those two, which is why her ears and her computer appear to disagree and are in fact describing different stages.
Why that is workable: neither remaining cause touches what is written on the platters. Service-area faults are addressed through the manufacturer's own technological modes, with damaged modules repaired until the drive will identify itself and address its media; calibration failures are met at the mechanism. In both cases the discipline is the same afterwards: the moment the drive reads, it is imaged completely, and everything else happens on the copy. The practical instruction meanwhile is to stop plugging it in — each attempt is another round of failed calibration over the photographs.

That split is genuinely useful, so note it before contacting anyone: your computer is seeing the enclosure's bridge board, not a disk, which places the fault in the drive rather than in your cable, port or computer. If it also sounds completely normal, that tells you the motor is fine and the failure is in the silent part of start-up — head calibration or the drive reading its own internal management data. Neither erases anything. Stop plugging it in, though: each attempt repeats a failing start-up over your files. And ask two commercial questions before you commit anywhere — is the assessment free, and do I pay anything if the data cannot be recovered? On work that doesn't involve opening the drive, the answer should be nothing at all; where a drive must be opened, expect a parts-and-labour deposit, because the donor is consumed either way.
