Hard Drive Clicking: Can You Prioritise One Folder?

His enquiry was five short lines and contained a request worth taking seriously. A faulty 2TB Toshiba drive: "started clicking, now not accessible. Need data off it. One large directory especially." The decode: what clicking means, and when a priority can be honoured

What the clicking is: the sound of a head assembly attempting a seek and failing. A drive positions its heads by moving them to a target and confirming the position against servo patterns written on the platters; when the heads cannot read those patterns — because they are damaged, weakened, or the surface beneath them is — the drive retracts and tries again, and that repeated attempt-and-retract is the click. It usually means head failure, and it always means the drive should not be powered further: each cycle is the assembly rehearsing its failure across the surfaces holding his data.
