PC Failed: Recovering Data From the Removed Drive

His enquiry was orderly and had already done the sensible thing. "I am inquiring about a quote for recovery of data from my desktop PC hard disk. The PC failed and I have since removed the hard disk (1.5TB Seagate Barracuda). There is a mix of documents — approximately 1GB — and photos, approximately 200GB, that were not backed up and that I would like to access." Removing the drive rather than leaving it in a dead machine was exactly right, and the detail he supplies makes the case straightforward to scope. But the assumption embedded in the word recovery is worth examining before anything is spent, because it may not apply: a computer failing does not mean its hard disk failed. A great many drives pulled from dead PCs are in perfect health, and the honest first question is whether this is a recovery at all or simply a drive that needs reading.

The decode: what actually fails in a PC, and why the drive is often innocent

What usually kills a desktop: the common causes are not storage. Power supplies fail, and they are the single most frequent culprit — often taking nothing else with them. Motherboards fail, through capacitor ageing or a component giving out. Graphics cards die. Cooling fails and the processor shuts the machine down. Operating systems become unbootable through a corrupted update or a failed driver. In every one of those, the hard disk is a bystander that simply stopped being asked for anything. So the population of drives pulled from dead PCs is dominated by healthy drives — and the honest response to his enquiry is to find that out before quoting for anything more elaborate.

Why the distinction matters commercially: if the drive is healthy, this is a read-and-transfer job: connect it safely, copy the documents and photographs onto media he can use, verify, done. If the drive is the reason the PC failed — which does happen, particularly where the machine had been slow or crashing before it died — then it is a genuine recovery with the corresponding work and terms. Those are very different propositions, and nobody should be quoted the second when they need the first. That is what a free assessment is for, and it is why the assessment comes before the figure rather than after it.

What his own account hints at: he reports no drive-specific symptoms — no clicking, no slowness before the failure, no error messages about the disk. So the first thing worth establishing is whether you need a recovery or just a transfer, and that should cost you nothing to find out. Think about whether the machine gave any storage-specific warnings before it died: clicking, months of slowness, disk errors. If it didn't, the odds are good. Resist the obvious test of fitting the drive into another working PC — a booted system can offer to initialise a disk it can't read, propose repairing a filesystem it thinks is damaged, and start indexing, all of which write to a drive you haven't assessed. Connect it write-blocked instead, or have it looked at.
