The decode: what a drive letter proves, and why chkdsk is the wrong answer
What the drive letter tells us: more than most people realise. For Windows to assign a letter, it must have read the disk's partition structures successfully — the records at the front of the drive that declare where each volume begins and how large it is. Those are intact. What failed is the next layer up: the filesystem inside that volume, whose own structures describe the files and folders. So the damage is confined to one storey of the building, and the storey below it is sound. That is a materially better position than a drive that never appears, or one reported as unformatted, and it is why the outlook here is good.
Why an update is the classic trigger: a system update is one of the heaviest sustained write operations a computer performs — replacing system files, rewriting registries, updating journals, and touching filesystem metadata continuously across every mounted volume. Remove power in the middle of that and the structures being updated are left half-written: entries partially modified, journals recording transactions that never completed, allocation records disagreeing with each other. The result is a filesystem that is internally inconsistent, which is precisely what the error message says.
