Drive Shows in Disk Utility but Fails to Mount

His enquiry described the symptom with unusual precision, and the precision is what makes the outlook good. A Seagate 1TB external drive: "showing up in Disk Utility on my Mac, but fails to mount. The power light is on, but I am unable to access it." Three separate facts, and each one eliminates a category of serious fault. The light means power is arriving. Appearing in Disk Utility means the Mac has identified it as a disk and read enough to list it. And failing to mount means the failure is happening at the last stage of a long chain — which is the best place in that chain for a failure to happen, because everything below it is working and the contents sit intact behind a structure that will not parse. This page explains what mounting actually requires, and identifies the button in front of him that would make things worse.

The decode: what mounting requires, and the button to avoid

What has already succeeded: for the drive to be listed by name in Disk Utility, a great deal has gone right. It received power and spun up. It completed its internal start-up and identified itself. The Mac read its partition structures — the records at the front of the disk declaring where volumes begin and how large they are — well enough to enumerate what is on it. That is four stages, and every one of them is a stage where the drives elsewhere in this archive fail. His has passed all of them.

What mounting adds: the final stage is the demanding one. To mount a volume, the operating system must read the filesystem's own structures — the catalogue of files and folders, the allocation records tracking which space is used, the journal recording recent changes — and find them internally consistent. If any of those is damaged or contradicts another, the mount is refused, because mounting an inconsistent filesystem risks corrupting it further. So the refusal is the system being careful rather than the drive being broken. And critically, none of that describes the file contents, which sit exactly where they were written, behind a catalogue that cannot currently be read.

The button to leave alone: Disk Utility, having listed the drive, offers First Aid — and it is the obvious thing to press. What First Aid does is attempt to repair the filesystem by writing corrections to it: choosing between records that disagree, discarding entries it cannot reconcile, and relocating orphaned data into recovery folders under generic names. On a lightly inconsistent volume it often works. On a badly damaged one it can convert something reconstructable into permanent structural loss, and it strips filenames and folder relationships in the process. The distinction that matters: a reconstruction performed on an image examines the same damage with the whole picture available and nothing at risk, and rebuilds the catalogue as it was rather than as a repair tool decides it should be. So the sequence is image first, repair second — and never repair the only copy.

What else to decline: if the Mac offers to initialise the disk, or Disk Utility offers to erase it, those write fresh empty structures over exactly what a reconstruction rebuilds from. And the drive should not be repeatedly unplugged and reconnected in the hope of a different result; the answer will not change, and a drive that has begun to develop structural damage is often developing other things too.

On the bench

The drive was imaged write-blocked in one pass before any repair was contemplated, which is the discipline that a repair utility fundamentally cannot offer — everything afterwards happened against a copy, and the original was never modified. On the image the structures were examined in order, partition records first and then the filesystem, to establish which layer had failed and how far the damage extended. It repairs filesystems by writing corrections — choosing between records that disagree, discarding entries it can't reconcile, and moving orphaned data into recovery folders with generic names and no structure — and on a badly damaged volume that turns something rebuildable into permanent loss. Decline any offer to initialise or erase as well, since those write fresh empty structures over the damaged ones a recovery rebuilds from. Don't keep unplugging and reconnecting to try again; the answer won't change. Get one write-blocked image taken, and let the catalogue be rebuilt on the copy where nothing is at risk.
