Disk Shows as Unknown and Not Initialised
His enquiry did the diagnostic work of a bench visit before he sent it. A second internal SATA drive: "shown in UEFI and in Device Manager, but not in Windows Explorer. Using Disk Management, the disk shows as Unknown and Not Initialised." He asked for a reply by email, which was honoured. That is four separate observations at four different levels of the system, and together they locate the fault with real precision — because Windows sees storage in a ladder, and which rungs a device reaches narrows the problem more than any single test. This page sets out that ladder, explains exactly what his combination means, and identifies the one thing Disk Management is about to offer him that he must not accept.

The decode: the four rungs, and what his combination proves
Rung one — system firmware. The deepest level, running before any operating system exists. If the drive appears there, it is receiving power, has spun up, completed its internal start-up, read its own service area and identified itself. That single fact eliminates the entire category of mechanical and firmware failures that fill much of this archive — the drives that click, beep, spin without ever announcing themselves, or never spin at all. Rung two — Device Manager. Windows' view of connected hardware. Appearing here confirms the drive is communicating properly with the operating system's storage layer and that drivers and the interface are working. His drive appears here too.
Rung three — Disk Management. Where Windows reports what it makes of the disk's contents. This is the rung where his drive fails, and how it fails is the diagnosis: Unknown and Not Initialised means Windows could not read a valid partition table. The disk is present and answering; its map is unreadable.
Rung four — File Explorer. Shows mounted volumes only. With no readable partition table there are no volumes to mount, so its absence here follows automatically and adds nothing new.
What that combination establishes: everything mechanical, electrical and firmware-level is working — three of the four rungs cleared. The fault is confined to the partition structures, which are a small map at the front of the disk rather than the data itself. His files sit intact in volumes further in, unreachable only because the index pointing to them cannot be read. Of all the ways a drive can fail, this is among the most recoverable.
The offer to refuse: Disk Management, having reported the disk as Not Initialised, presents initialisation as the obvious remedy — often as a dialogue that appears automatically. Accepting it writes a fresh empty partition table over the damaged one, discarding whatever the original still held, and it is normally followed by prompts to create and format a volume, which begin writing over the data itself. The word makes it sound like preparation. It is replacement. Decline it, close the dialogue, and do not right-click anything else in that window.
On the bench
The ladder had already been climbed by the owner, so the drive went straight to imaging: read write-blocked in one pass, so that nothing could be written to it and no dialogue could be accepted by accident. On the image the disk was scanned for volume boot structures and their backup copies — each marking a real volume boundary — and their declared sizes and types were used to rebuild a partition map from the disk's own evidence rather than from assumption. Candidate reconstructions were tested against the filesystem until the volumes mounted cleanly with their folder trees, names and dates intact. Contents were verified by opening and delivered on fresh media, with findings sent by email as he had asked.
The outcome
The partition map rebuilt from the disk's own structures on a write-blocked image, and the contents verified and delivered. Disk reported as Unknown and Not Initialised
Close that dialogue and don't accept it. Initialising writes a new, empty partition table over the damaged one — it sounds like preparation and it is replacement — and it's usually followed by prompts to create and format a volume, which is what starts overwriting your files. Then read your own evidence, because it's good news: if the drive appears in your system firmware and in Device Manager, then power, spin-up, internal start-up, identification and the interface are all working, which rules out every mechanical and firmware fault. Failing only at Disk Management means the small map at the front of the disk can't be read while your volumes sit intact further in. Don't right-click anything in Disk Management, don't run repair tools, and don't create a partition to test it. That map can be rebuilt from the disk's own volume structures, provided nothing writes over them first.
