Her enquiry recorded a short sequence and, in doing so, recorded the evidence that reframes it. A WD Passport 2TB: "crashed when I cancelled a data transfer, cannot see it now when plugged in. I tried to safely remove it but the laptop didn't recognise it." The natural reading is that cancelling broke the drive, and that reading is probably wrong — or at least incomplete. The detail that matters is the last one: when she went to eject it properly, the laptop no longer recognised the drive at all. That is not what a cancelled copy leaves behind. A cancelled copy leaves a drive that is still present with some untidy filesystem records. A drive that has vanished from the system entirely has stopped responding — and the likeliest explanation is that it was already failing, and the transfer is simply what asked enough of it to expose that.

The decode: what cancelling does, and what the failed eject reveals

What cancelling a transfer actually does: less than people fear. Pressing cancel stops the system queueing further work — it does not reach into the drive and interrupt an operation already in progress, and it does not reverse what has already been written. What it can leave behind is untidiness: a partially written file, allocation records showing space claimed by something incomplete, and a journal entry describing a transaction that was abandoned. Filesystems are designed for exactly that, and the usual consequence of a cancelled copy is a partial file to delete and nothing more. It is emphatically not a normal way to render a drive invisible.

Why the failed eject is the real evidence: her attempt to remove the drive safely failed because the laptop no longer recognised the device. Safe removal is a request to a device the system can still see; a system that cannot see the device has nothing to eject. So by the time she tried, the drive had already dropped off the bus — it had stopped responding electrically. That is a hardware event rather than a filesystem one, and it reorders the story: the crash she experienced was most likely the drive failing to answer, with the cancellation a coincidence of timing rather than a cause.

Why a transfer is when this surfaces: everyday use of a drive is undemanding — brief reads, long idle periods. A sustained transfer is the opposite: continuous reading or writing across large areas of the disk for a prolonged period, with the mechanism working constantly. A drive with weak regions, a marginal head, or deteriorating electronics will often cope perfectly with light use and fail under exactly that load. It is one of the most common patterns in this archive: the fault did not arrive during the copy, it was revealed by it. What follows from that: because the drive stopped enumerating rather than merely presenting a damaged volume, the assessment is a hardware one — power-on behaviour, whether it reaches readiness, and where in its start-up sequence it stops. That is read by measurement rather than inferred by plugging it in again, and repeated connection attempts add nothing: a drive that has stopped answering will not answer differently on the fourth attempt, and if the underlying cause is mechanical, each attempt spends margin the recovery needs.

On the bench

The drive was taken out of its enclosure and assessed on a native connection, which removes the bridge board from the question — a step worth taking whenever a drive stops enumerating, since enclosure electronics fail too and they are the cheapest possible answer. The volume was rebuilt from the image, including the partial file the cancelled transfer had left, and her contents were verified by opening.
