Dropped Hard Drive: Whirs, Then Clicks

Her enquiry was precise about a sequence and refreshingly unembarrassed about the cause. A WD Elements 1TB drive: "won't show up on my file explorer but shows up on my devices. It turns on, whirs, and then starts clicking. My cat pushed it off my desk." Two observations, both diagnostic. The order of the sounds — whirring first, clicking after — narrows the damage to a specific component and rules out another. And the split between devices and file explorer describes two different levels of being seen, only one of which the drive has reached. Between them they produce a fairly complete picture before anything is opened, and they point at a fault that is entirely recoverable if the drive stops being asked to demonstrate it.

The decode: what the order proves, and the two levels of seen

Why whirring first is good news: the sequence localises the fault precisely. The whir is the spindle motor bringing the platters up to speed — so the motor works, the bearings turn freely, and the drive's power delivery and board are functioning. That rules out seized spindles, adhered heads and the beeping category of failure in one observation. The clicking then begins after the platters are turning, which places the fault in what happens next: the head assembly attempting to position itself and failing. On a dropped drive that is the expected outcome, because the heads and their supporting arms are the most impact-sensitive parts of the mechanism.

What the clicking is: the drive moves its heads to a target and confirms the position by reading servo patterns written on the platters. Damaged, displaced or misaligned heads cannot read those patterns, so the drive retracts and tries again — and the repeated attempt-and-retract is the click. Each cycle is a damaged assembly travelling across surfaces that hold her files.

The two levels of seen: her second observation is more useful than she may realise. Appearing among devices means the enclosure's bridge board — the small board converting the drive's native connection to USB — is powered, working and announcing itself to the computer. Not appearing in file explorer means no volume has been presented, because the drive behind that bridge never completed its start-up and never reported ready. So the computer is seeing the enclosure, not the disk. That split rules out cable, port and computer faults entirely, and it means every remaining candidate is inside the drive.

The question that changes the odds: whether it was powered when it fell. A drive that was switched off had its heads parked clear of the data surfaces on a ramp, and desk-height falls in that state are frequently survived outright. A drive that was running had heads flying nanometres above spinning platters, and an impact can drive them into the surface. Her drive spins and clicks, which is consistent with either — but it is worth telling the bench, because it changes what the inspection expects to find.

What matters now: the drive should not be connected again. It has already demonstrated its fault, the fault is understood, and each further demonstration risks converting head damage into surface scoring, which is the one outcome nothing reverses.

On the bench

The drive was not powered on arrival. Under the laminar flow bench the head assembly was examined for the displacement the fall had caused and the platters for the scoring that repeated clicking can produce — the inspection deciding the plan rather than following one. Matched donor heads were fitted, the Atola Insight Forensic confirmed the serviced mechanism and mapped surface condition per head, and imaging ran on the PC-3000 Express under Data Extractor: head-mapped, prioritised, healthy regions captured completely before any damaged zone was approached, all in one supervised session. Drive that spins up and then starts clicking

Unplug it and leave it unplugged — it has already told you what is wrong and further attempts only cost you. Read the sequence as a diagnosis: spinning up first means the motor, bearings and board are all working, which rules out the seized and stuck categories entirely, and clicking afterwards means the head assembly is failing to position itself, which is exactly what an impact damages. If it also shows among your devices but not as a drive, that's the enclosure announcing itself while the disk never reaches readiness — so cables, ports and other computers are already eliminated and testing them wastes the drive's remaining margin. Keep it flat and still, don't shake it, don't freeze it, and don't open it. When you ask for help, mention whether it was switched on when it fell — a parked head assembly survives falls that a flying one does not, and it changes what the inspection expects.
