His description drew the line between two things that feel similar and are not. A WD My Passport Ultra 1TB that "has been dropped on the floor. The computer does recognise the drive and you can sort of browse the folders, but it's slow and I can't back up my data." What he needs is about 500GB of photographs moved off it. That gap — folders that open, copies that fail — is the most misread state in this archive, because it looks like a drive that is nearly fine and is in fact a drive on a clock. Browsing reads a tiny amount of metadata. Copying half a terabyte reads everything, including all the places the drop damaged. And every attempt at the latter spends what is left of the former.

The decode: why the copy fails when the folders don't, and what the drop did
Two workloads, two different demands: opening a folder reads a small, tightly-grouped set of directory records — a few thousandths of the disk, and usually in areas the drive keeps healthy. Copying 500GB of photographs walks the platters end to end, reading every region including the damaged ones. So "I can browse but not back up" is not a mysterious inconsistency: it is precisely what a drive with localised damage does. The slowness he reports is the same story in a different form — the drive hitting weak sectors and retrying them internally, seconds at a time, where microseconds belong.
What a drop does to a running drive: if the impact happened while the drive was powered, the heads were flying nanometres above spinning platters. A shock can push a head into contact with the surface — scoring a track, damaging the head itself, or scattering debris that then makes matters worse on every subsequent rotation. That produces exactly this pattern: mostly-working, with regions that refuse. It also produces the reason for urgency: a damaged head over a scored surface is a mechanism actively degrading, and it degrades while it works.
Why repeated backup attempts are the worst response: here is the hard part, said plainly because it decides outcomes. Each failed copy attempt is a full-surface sweep across the damaged regions, and each sweep can widen the damage. Worse, ordinary copying reads files in whatever order the catalogue lists them, so the drive's remaining good passes get spent on whatever happens to be alphabetically first rather than on what matters. A drive in this state has a finite number of reads left in it, and the only sensible way to spend them is one prioritised, hardware-managed imaging pass — healthy regions captured first and completely, weak neighbourhoods approached last under tight per-sector timeouts, dropouts absorbed and resumed rather than restarting the whole job. Everything then comes off the image, where a photograph can be read a hundred times at no cost.

Don't be reassured that the folders open, and don't treat the slowness as the drive being old: it's the mechanism retrying bad sectors in real time. Don't run consumer backup or clone software at it either — those tools can't enforce timeouts or prioritise, so they burn the drive's remaining reads in catalogue order. Unplug it, keep it still, and have it imaged once behind hardware that manages the instability, healthy regions first. Then take your photos off the copy, as many times as you like.
