External Hard Drive Not Showing Up: the Noise Came First
Her enquiry was four lines and contains a sequence that decides the whole approach. A Seagate external drive that "seems to have stopped working, it is not being recognised by computer. It is not a cable issue. It started making a weird noise and suddenly disappeared." Two things are already established before anything reaches a bench, and one of them is more useful than she probably realises. That ordering is not incidental. A drive that becomes noisy and then vanishes is describing a mechanism that degraded to the point of being unable to complete its own start-up — which tells us where the fault is, and makes one instruction more urgent than everything else on this page.

The decode: why the order matters, and why it must stay unplugged
What the sequence tells us: if a drive disappears first and makes noise afterwards, the noise might be incidental — a fan, an enclosure, a coincidence. When the noise comes first and the drive stops being recognised afterwards, the two are almost certainly the same event: the mechanism began to fail audibly, and then failed far enough that it could no longer complete the start-up sequence required before a computer can see it. That sequence — spin up, unpark the heads, calibrate against the servo patterns, read the drive's own service area, report ready — happens silently after the initial spin, and a failure anywhere in it produces exactly her result. So her ordering points at the mechanism rather than at the filesystem, the enclosure or the host.
What "not a cable issue" saves: more than it sounds. Cables and their connectors are the most frequent cause of a portable drive vanishing, and eliminating them removes the cheapest explanation cleanly. Combined with the noise, it means the remaining candidates are all inside the drive.
