Seagate External Hard Drive Not Showing Up: Spinning Is Not Ready
His enquiry was short, precise, and had already done a piece of real diagnostic work. A Seagate 4TB external hard drive that "stopped being recognised by the computer — however the drive is spinning, as I can hear the spinning plates." And the elimination that matters: "I tried it on two different docking stations and I get the same result." Two things are established before the drive reaches a bench, and one common assumption needs correcting. The assumption first, because it is the reason so many owners of spinning drives are told the wrong thing: a drive that spins is not a drive that is working. Spin-up is the opening move of a long start-up sequence, and a mechanism can complete it perfectly and still never reach the point of announcing itself. His two docks, meanwhile, have done the bench a favour that saves an entire diagnostic stage.

The decode: the start-up sequence, and what two docks proved
What has to happen after the spin: reaching operating speed is roughly the first second of a drive's working life. Next the heads must leave their parked position and perform calibration seeks — finding the servo patterns that tell the mechanism where it is — and then the drive must read its own service area: the reserved regions holding its firmware modules, translation tables and adaptive settings. Only when both succeed does the drive report ready and identify itself to whatever it is plugged into. A failure anywhere in that chain produces exactly his symptom: audible, healthy-sounding rotation and total silence on the interface. The sound is real; it is simply reporting the one stage that worked.
What his two docks eliminated: testing across two separate docking stations is worth more than testing across two computers, because it removes the entire external-interface chain — the bridge electronics that translate the drive's native connection to USB, and the power delivery that goes with them. That is the most common benign explanation for a vanished external drive, and he has ruled it out himself. Whatever is wrong travelled with the drive, which means the answer is inside it: heads that can no longer calibrate, or a service area the controller can no longer read.
Why that is workable rather than grim: both remaining suspects are ordinary professional work, and neither consumes what is written on the platters. Service-area problems are addressed through the manufacturer's own technological modes — the reserved regions read, damaged modules repaired or regenerated, until the drive will identify and address its media again. Head calibration failures are met at the mechanism. In both cases the discipline afterwards is identical and non-negotiable: the moment the drive will read, it is imaged completely, once, and every later question is asked of the copy. And the practical instruction while he waits is simply to stop powering it — each attempt is another set of failing calibration seeks over the surfaces holding four terabytes.
On the bench
The Atola Insight Forensic read the start-up sequence electrically rather than by ear: the current signature through spin-up, the seek attempts and their outcome, the point at which the drive stopped progressing — turning "spinning but silent" into a specific, located finding. From there the road followed the diagnosis: PC-3000 Express access to the drive's technological modes, the service area read and its damaged modules repaired until the drive would identify itself and address its own media, and then, immediately, imaging under Data Extractor on a per-head map. Drive spins but no computer will recognise it
Take the spin for what it is: proof the motor works, and no more. After spin-up a drive still has to calibrate its heads and read its own service area before it can announce itself, and both of those fail silently — so "I can hear it spinning" is not evidence the drive is fine. Do the one test that genuinely narrows it: try a second dock or enclosure. Identical behaviour on two removes the interface electronics and power path from suspicion and tells you the fault is in the drive. Then stop: each further power-up is another round of failing seeks across your data. Don't freeze it, tap it, or run repair software at it.
