Her enquiry contained a before-and-after that does real diagnostic work. "My hard drive isn't being read by my laptop, nor is it being read on any other laptop. When it was working it had a light to say it's been connected, but now it doesn't have that." Elsewhere in this archive there are cases where the light comes on and the drive is invisible — and there the light is a distraction, because it sits ahead of everything that matters. Her situation is the opposite and considerably more informative: the light used to work and has stopped. That is not a distraction; it is a measurement. It means power is no longer reaching the point where that indicator sits, or is no longer being accepted — which places the fault in a specific and largely benign part of the chain.

The decode: why a light going out is useful, and the short list of causes

What the change tells us: the indicator on an external drive is driven by the incoming power rail. When it lights, power has reached the enclosure's board. When it stops lighting on a drive where it previously did, one of a small number of things has happened — and crucially, none of them involves the platters or what is written on them. This is one of the more reassuring symptoms in the archive, precisely because it is so far from the data.

The short list, in order of hopefulness. The cable — the most common cause and the cheapest, particularly on bus-powered portables where the same cable carries both power and data; cables fail internally at the strain points where they are repeatedly bent, and a cable that carries data fine for years can fail entirely. The port or its power delivery — a worn socket, or a host port that no longer supplies enough current, which is why hubs, keyboards and monitor ports are worth avoiding for drives. The enclosure board — the small board inside the case, whose protective components are designed to die first in a surge and often do. The drive's own electronics — a fault on the drive's circuit board, which is board-level work and still does not touch the recorded data. Four causes, and every one of them leaves the contents exactly where they were.

What her testing did and did not establish: trying multiple laptops rules out one machine's ports and drivers, which is worth having. What it does not rule out is the cable, because most people carry the drive and its cable together and test both on every machine. So the single most valuable free test remaining is a different cable — ideally a known-good one rather than another of the same age — plugged directly into a computer rather than through a hub or a display.

Why this is a good position to be in: compared with the drives elsewhere in this volume that click, grind or beep, a completely unpowered drive is doing nothing at all — no mechanism is running, nothing is in contact, and nothing is deteriorating while she works out what to do. There is no urgency clock here beyond the ordinary one, and no risk in taking the time to test properly.

On the bench

The power path was walked in order rather than assumed, on a correct-specification supply: the cable and the host connection eliminated first, then the enclosure's board, then the drive itself on a native connection with the case removed from the equation. The Atola Insight Forensic read the drive's power-on current signature directly, which distinguishes a drive that receives no power from one that receives it and cannot start — a distinction impossible to make from outside a sealed enclosure and the reason this stage is done on instruments rather than by substitution. With the failing stage identified and the drive answering, imaging ran immediately on the PC-3000 Express under Data Extractor, and the contents were verified by opening and delivered on fresh media.

The outcome

The failing stage of the power chain identified, the drive read and its contents verified and delivered. Drive light no longer comes on

Take this as one of the better symptoms to have. A light that used to work and has stopped means power is no longer reaching the enclosure, and the four things that cause it — the cable, the host port, the enclosure's board, or the drive's own electronics — all leave your data untouched. Nothing is spinning, so nothing is getting worse while you work through it. Do the free tests properly, and note that trying several computers does not test the cable, because it usually travels with the drive: borrow a different known-good cable, and plug directly into the computer rather than through a hub, keyboard or monitor, since those often cannot supply enough current. If a different cable and a direct port change nothing, stop there — the remaining causes are inside the case and need proper diagnosis rather than more substitution. Don't open the enclosure yourself if the data matters.
