Noisy Laptop Drive, and the Locked Phone Question

His enquiry asked two things and deserves two separate answers, because they have very different outcomes. First: "I have a roughly ten-year-old laptop with a hard drive that started to make noise and crashed. We'd like to recover its data. What is a rough cost estimate?" Second, and asked with some evident prior research: "can you recover data from old phones even if they are locked or cannot be rooted?" He asked for email contact first, which was honoured. The laptop drive is a familiar and workable case, and the cost framing is set out below. The phone question is the one that matters more, because the honest answer is largely no — and the reason why is worth understanding, since it applies to every modern phone anyone owns.

The decode: the drive, the cost, and why locked phones are different

The laptop drive: noise followed by a crash is the ordinary shape of mechanical failure — a drive that began struggling audibly and then failed far enough that the system could no longer use it. On a machine of that age it is a 2.5-inch drive of a well-supported generation, and the route is the familiar one: no further power-ups, inspection under filtered air before anything is switched on, head service with matched donor parts where required, and one supervised imaging session. On cost, the honest framing is the one this archive gives throughout: an indicative range can be offered from a description, but the binding number comes after a free assessment, in writing, and does not move. The lock screen is not a door in front of readable data; it is the mechanism that produces the key. So a locked phone whose passcode is unknown holds data that is genuinely unreadable — not "hard to reach", but mathematically inaccessible — and reading the memory chips directly returns ciphertext. Rooting is irrelevant to that, which is why an unrootable phone and a rootable one end in the same place.

What is still possible with phones, honestly: three things, none of which involve defeating the lock. Where the passcode is known, a phone that is damaged but repairable can often be brought back to a state where it unlocks and its contents copy off normally — that is handset board-level work, a genuine specialism, and it is what most phone recovery actually is. Where the phone backed up to a computer, those backup containers are recoverable from that computer, which this archive does regularly. And where the phone synced to a cloud account the owner can still access, the data may already be retrievable without touching the device at all. What nobody legitimate offers is bypassing a lock on a device whose passcode is unknown — and an outfit that claims to should be treated as a warning rather than an option.
