His enquiry was brief and carried an obligation most enquiries do not. "Laptop is unresponsive and holds key client data for my business. Hoping someone can recover the information. A rough price would be nice, if possible." The technical side is well-covered ground in this archive — a dead laptop usually means a power-side or board fault with the storage untouched, and the questions that matter are whether the module is removable and whether it is encrypted. What deserves this page is the other half of his sentence: client data. Recovering information that belongs to other people is not the same job as recovering your own, and there are questions a business should ask a recovery firm that almost nobody asks — not about technique, but about who touches the data, where copies live, and what happens to them afterwards.

The decode: the technical part briefly, then the questions to ask

The technical position, in short: a laptop that is unresponsive has usually failed on the power side or the mainboard, and the drive is a bystander. Two questions decide the route and should be answered before any figure: is the storage a removable module or soldered to the board, and is it encrypted? Will I get written confirmation that copies were destroyed? Yes, and it should be offered rather than requested. How is the recovered data delivered? Encrypted media, with the credential supplied separately, rather than an unprotected drive in the post. Will you sign a confidentiality agreement? Any firm handling business data should expect to be asked and should have no difficulty agreeing. What happens to the original hardware? Returned to you, or destroyed with confirmation, at your instruction rather than theirs.

Why none of this is unusual: a firm that finds these questions awkward is telling him something. They are ordinary requirements for anyone handling third-party personal information, and asking them costs nothing. For a business whose obligations to its clients survive the failure of its laptop, they matter as much as whether the data comes back.

On the rough price: honestly — an indicative range can be given from a description, but the binding figure follows a free assessment and is issued in writing before any work. What should never happen is a figure that grows once work has started.
