Can I Choose Which Files to Recover?

Her enquiry asked a question this archive has recommended asking and has never yet answered in full. A 1TB external drive with about 800GB used — university projects, personal photographs and a large collection of films: "at first the computer would try to open the files but ended up frozen. Now it can't even read the hard drive." Then the good question: "I would need to recover the projects and photographs, but the file with all the films isn't that important. I'm not sure if it's possible to pick what to recover, but as the film file is the heaviest one, it would be far less than 800GB." The answer is yes, selection is entirely possible — and the saving is smaller than she expects, for a reason worth understanding before she budgets around it. The decode: what selection saves, what it cannot, and where her saving really is

Why selection happens on the copy, not on the drive: the fact that governs everything. Files are not laid out in tidy blocks that can be picked over on a failing disk — they are spread across the surface, and identifying which sectors belong to which file requires the filesystem, which on a failing drive must itself be read from the disk. So the sequence is fixed: image first, select afterwards. That means the expensive, time-consuming part — reading a struggling mechanism — is largely the same whether she wants everything or a quarter of it.

What selection genuinely reduces: three real things, and they are worth having. The reconstruction and validation effort: rebuilding a filesystem and then verifying files by opening them is proportionate to what is delivered, and validating a few thousand photographs and documents is a materially smaller job than validating a film library too. The delivery media, which on a large recovery is not trivial. And, most importantly for her, the priority ordering: on a degrading drive the imaging pass can be sequenced so that the regions holding her projects and photographs are captured first, before the drive's remaining margin is spent on films she does not want. That is the difference between a partial result that contains her degree work and one that contains half a film collection.

Where her real saving is: not in the price of the imaging, but in the likelihood of getting what matters. She has told the bench which 200-odd gigabytes are worth the drive's remaining life. On a healthy drive that would be a convenience; on a drive that freezes and now will not read at all, it is the single most useful instruction she could have given. It converts a fixed amount of remaining mechanical margin into the highest-value output. She should expect that to be reflected in how the job is run rather than as a large discount, and she should be told so honestly rather than quoted a reduction that does not exist.

What her symptoms say: the freeze-then-fail progression is the familiar one — a drive retrying failing reads for long enough that the computer stops waiting, then declining further until it cannot present at all. Nothing in that describes deletion; it describes a mechanism losing the ability to deliver what it holds, which is why the priority instruction matters so much.

On the bench

Say so at the enquiry stage — it changes how the job is run even though it may not change the price much. Understand why: a failing drive has to be imaged before individual files can be identified at all, so the expensive part happens regardless of how much you want back. What your priorities genuinely buy is the sequencing. On a drive that is degrading, the imaging pass can be ordered to capture the regions holding your important material first, before the mechanism's remaining life is spent on things you do not need — which is often the difference between a partial recovery that contains your work and one that does not. Be wary of anyone offering a large discount for recovering less; that suggests they are charging by output rather than by the work. And name your priorities specifically — folders, file types, date ranges — rather than saying the photos matter most.
