His enquiry set out the uncertainty precisely and then asked for two different services depending on the answer. "I have a non-boot HDD — the PC will not boot up when switched on. I am unsure if there is a physical fault on the HDD or a software fault, or whether there is something else going on. What I would like is for the HDD to be repaired physically if it is a physical fault, and if it is something else, then the data on the HDD recovered." He works varied shifts and often sleeps during the day, so asked for email contact in the first instance — honoured throughout. His framing is logical and it contains one assumption worth examining, because it is the assumption that costs people their data: that the answer to physical or logical should determine what happens first. It shouldn't. The answer determines the route, but the order is the same either way — and this page sets out both, including the markers that separate the two.

The decode: the markers, and why the order doesn't change

What a physical fault sounds and behaves like: some markers an owner can read. Sound is the strongest: clicking, beeping, a repeated spin-up-and-stop, or a grinding note all indicate mechanism. Silence where there used to be a hum indicates a motor or board that is not starting. Slowness — a machine that takes minutes to do what took seconds — is very often a drive retrying weak sectors internally. And inconsistency is telling: a fault that comes and goes, or behaves differently on each power-up, points at hardware, because software faults are reliably reproducible.

What a logical fault looks like: the drive is present, healthy-sounding, correctly sized, and quick — but the system will not start, or the volume will not mount, or folders read empty, or a message asks to format. Error messages are specific rather than variable. Crucially, a logical fault is stable: the same thing happens the same way every time, because nothing is degrading between attempts.

Why neither of those is a diagnosis: and here is the honest limit of self-assessment. The two overlap in the most important case of all — a drive with weak sectors under the boot files produces a machine that will not start with no sound at all, and looks exactly like a software problem. That is why the actual separation is done by measurement rather than inference: the drive's power-on current signature, its head behaviour, its internal health data, and how it responds to reads across the surface. Those distinguish the two definitively, and they do it without writing anything to the disk.

Why the order is the same either way: the important correction to his plan. If the fault is physical, then every boot attempt and every repair procedure is spending a degrading mechanism — so the data must come off first, before anything else is attempted. If the fault is logical, imaging costs nothing, changes nothing, and the repair is then performed safely on the copy rather than on the only original. There is no version of this where doing the repair first is the better sequence. So the answer to "physical or logical" is genuinely worth knowing, and it should be established by diagnosis and put in writing — but it comes with a complete image already taken, not instead of one.

And the word "repaired": gently, as with several enquiries in this archive — a drive that has failed once should not be trusted with the only copy of anything afterwards, whichever kind of fault it had. The realistic outcome is data recovered onto media he can rely on, and the old drive retired.

Use the rough markers, then stop guessing. Physical: clicking, beeping, repeated spin-and-stop, grinding, unexpected silence, dramatic slowness, or behaviour that varies between power-ups. Logical: the drive sounds normal and responds quickly, but won't boot or mount, or shows a specific, identical error every time. The catch is that a drive with weak sectors under the boot files looks exactly like a software fault — which is why the two overlap where it matters most. Whichever you suspect, do the same thing: stop powering it repeatedly, don't run repair utilities, and get the data imaged before any repair is attempted. That sequence is safe if the fault turns out to be logical and essential if it's physical. And don't plan to reuse the drive afterwards — recover onto media you can trust, and retire the one that failed.
