Unresponsive Mac Hard Drive: Do You Actually Open It Up?
His enquiry arrived with the diagnostic work already done by someone competent, and with one sentence that this page exists to correct kindly. A 500GB drive from a 2010 MacBook Pro: "the Mac wasn't booting, so I took it into a PC specialist for repairs, and without the hard drive installed it boots fine." That is a clean, decisive elimination — the machine is healthy and the drive is the fault. Then: "I am told the drive is unresponsive when trying to connect it up to acquire data, but have been told professional data recovery companies like yourselves might be able to help, as you actually open the drive up." The referring shop was right to send him on and right about the boundary. But the phrase carries a widespread misconception worth unpicking, because it makes people expect the wrong thing and fear the wrong risk: opening a drive is a last resort, not the defining service — and most recoveries never involve it at all.

The decode: the shop's elimination, and what opening a drive really is
What the referring shop proved: removing the drive and confirming the machine boots normally without it is genuinely valuable work, and it should be credited. It rules out the logic board, the power system, the display chain and the operating system in one test, and it leaves exactly one suspect. They then established that the drive does not respond when connected for data access — which narrows things further — and, crucially, they stopped there and referred him on rather than experimenting. That is the trade behaving exactly as this archive keeps hoping it will.
Why "you open the drive up" is only sometimes true: the popular image of data recovery is a sealed drive being opened under filtered air, and that work is real — but it is the response to one class of fault, and not the most common one. An unresponsive drive has three broad causes, and only the third involves opening anything. Electronics: a failure on the drive's own circuit board, addressed at board level with the original's adaptive data transferred across — nothing opened. Firmware and service area: the drive's internal management data corrupted so it cannot complete start-up, addressed through the manufacturer's technological modes — again, nothing opened. Mechanical: heads or motor, which does require the sealed part of the drive to be opened under filtered air at a laminar flow bench, with matched donor parts fitted. The honest proportion is that a great many recoveries are resolved without ever breaking the seal, and a firm that opened every drive that arrived would be doing unnecessary and irreversible work.
Why the distinction matters to him: two practical reasons. It changes the terms — where a drive has to be opened, parts are bought and consumed, which is why a deposit against parts and labour applies; where it does not, no recovery no fee is straightforward. And it changes what he should expect to be told: the assessment's job is to identify which of the three it is, in writing, before anything irreversible happens — not to open the drive because that is what recovery firms are assumed to do.
The one thing that stays constant: whichever cause it turns out to be, the goal is identical — get the drive to a state where it will read, then take one complete image immediately, and answer every subsequent question from the copy. The 2010 machine's era helps here too: a standard removable drive, no proprietary connector, nothing to work around.
On the bench

So ask any lab what they'll do first — the right answer is a diagnostic that establishes whether the fault is electronic, firmware or mechanical, put in writing before anything irreversible happens, rather than opening the drive because that's what's expected. It matters commercially too: opening means parts bought and consumed, so expect a deposit against parts and labour there, while non-opening work is usually straightforward no recovery, no fee. And if a repair shop has already shown your machine boots fine without the drive, bring that with you — it's a genuine elimination and it saves a stage.
