Hard Drive Not Recognised After a Hard Reset: the Reset Mid-Write
His enquiry was two sentences with a working year inside them. "My PC had a hard reset while working, and my hard drive I use for work isn't registering on my PC anymore — and I have a year's worth of footage that I use for b-roll at a football club." The timing is the diagnosis here: a drive that stops being recognised at the moment of an abrupt reset has almost certainly been injured by the reset rather than coincidentally with it. A hard reset is not the same as shutting down — it removes power from a drive that is mid-operation, with its heads flying and possibly a write in progress. The decode: three things a reset can break, and why video recovers well
What actually happens at the moment of a hard reset: a normal shutdown gives a drive a sequence — finish outstanding writes, flush the cache, park the heads clear of the platters, spin down. A hard reset gives it none of that. The drive is running at full speed with heads flying nanometres above the surface when the power disappears, and it must perform an emergency retract using the last of the spindle's momentum to pull the heads to safety. Drives are designed for this and survive it thousands of times. But it is a stress event, and three distinct things can go wrong.
One — the heads don't make it back. If the emergency retract fails, heads can come to rest on the platter surface and adhere there. The drive then either does nothing on the next power-up or makes a brief attempt and stops, and it will not identify itself. This is mechanical and recoverable, and the crucial detail is that repeated attempts to start it are what turn adhesion into surface damage.
Two — a write was in flight. If the drive was updating filesystem structures at the instant of the cut, those structures can be left half-written. That produces a drive that is electrically fine but whose volume cannot be parsed — and, depending on what the operating system makes of it, may not present usefully at all. This is the most common outcome and the most straightforwardly recoverable.
Three — the reset itself was a symptom. Worth naming, because it changes the urgency. Machines do not usually hard-reset for no reason: a failing power supply, a brownout, or a drive drawing abnormal current can all cause one. If the reset was caused by an electrical problem, the drive may have taken a surge along with everything else, and its own board may be the fault. That is board-level work and, again, does not touch what is on the platters.
Why a year of footage is a good candidate: genuinely encouraging news for his specific loss. Video files are large and written in long, contiguous runs, and they carry strong internal signatures at their start. That combination makes them exceptional targets for content-based recovery: even where a catalogue has been destroyed and filenames are gone, video clips can be identified by their own structure, reassembled and validated by playing them. A year of small office documents scattered across a disk is a far harder proposition than a year of camera clips. His footage will very likely come back — possibly without its original filenames, which is a minor inconvenience for b-roll and a fair trade.
On the bench
The drive was not powered again casually — the first power-up after a failed retract is the one that matters. Drive stopped being recognised right after a crash or reset
Stop trying to boot or reconnect it. A hard reset catches the drive with its heads flying, and if the emergency retract failed they may now be resting on the platter — in which case each start attempt risks turning a recoverable fault into scored surfaces. Don't run repair tools or chkdsk either: if the reset interrupted a write, your filesystem structures are half-finished, and repair utilities write more. Consider whether the reset had a cause — a failing power supply or a brownout can take the drive's board with it, and it's worth not putting a recovered drive back into the same machine. If the lost material is video, the odds are genuinely good: large files with strong internal signatures recover well even without filenames, so don't be discouraged if a first look shows an unreadable volume. Get one image taken, then let everything be rebuilt from the copy.
