Her enquiry passed on a diagnosis she had been given and asked the obvious next question. "I have a Toshiba 1TB hard drive that has failed, and I have been told it has suffered stiction. I wondered how much it would cost for you to be able to recover the data from the hard drive with this problem?" The term is a real one and it describes something specific, but it is used loosely often enough that it is worth unpicking before any figure is discussed — because several quite different faults produce the same outward behaviour, and they are not all priced the same. The decode: what stiction is, what it sounds like, and how it is priced

What the word describes: stiction is a contraction of static friction, and in a hard drive it refers to the heads becoming adhered to the platter surface. When a drive powers down properly, the heads retract clear of the data area and park. If that retraction fails — a sudden power loss, a knock, a mechanism at the end of its life — the heads are left resting directly on a platter, and the surfaces are smooth enough that they can effectively stick to it. The platter stack then cannot turn, or can only turn against resistance, and the drive cannot start. A related and less common variant involves the spindle bearing itself seizing after long disuse.

What it sounds like: characteristically, a drive that does almost nothing. Silence, or a faint buzz as the motor strains without turning, or a brief attempt that stops immediately, sometimes repeating. What it is not is a drive that spins up healthily — if the platters reach speed, the heads are not stuck.

Why powering it is the danger: this is the part that decides the outcome, and it applies whether or not the diagnosis is right. Heads resting on a stationary platter have damaged nothing. A motor repeatedly straining against them can drag them across the surface, scoring the magnetic layer permanently and, in the worst case, tearing the head assembly and scattering debris that ruins tracks beyond it. So the number of times a suspected-stiction drive has been switched on is very often the largest single factor in how much comes back — and the correct instruction is absolute: no more power, not even to check whether it has improved.

Why the diagnosis is worth confirming: and here is where she may gain. A drive that will not spin looks identical from outside whether the cause is adhered heads, a seized spindle, a failed component on the drive's own circuit board, or a firmware fault that prevents the start sequence. Of those, the board and firmware faults require no opening at all and cost considerably less. Stiction is a real and common answer, but it is also the one people reach for when a drive will not start, and it is worth having established by measurement rather than inherited.
