Hard Drive Data Recovery: What's Actually on the Old Drive?
His enquiry was one of the shortest in the archive and asks something none of the others do. An "old Seagate 160GB external hard drive that hasn't worked for years" — and then, rather than a recovery request: "I would like to know what is on it?" That is a different question, and it is a perfectly sensible one. He is not asking for a rescue; he is asking whether there is anything worth rescuing. Nobody should be expected to commit to a recovery for contents they cannot remember, on a drive that stopped working before the current decade. So this page answers the question he actually asked: how the contents of a dormant drive get established before any decision, what years in a drawer genuinely change, and why a small old drive is a more hopeful patient than its age suggests.

The decode: what dormancy does, and how "what's on it" gets answered for free
What years in a drawer actually change: a stored drive does not rot, and magnetic data on platters is stable for a very long time — decades, not years. What ages is the mechanism. Three things genuinely happen. Stiction: heads left resting can adhere to the platter surface, so the motor cannot break them free and the drive either stays silent or produces the click-and-stop this archive documents. Lubricant migration: bearings and ramps stiffen, making spin-up harder than it was the day it was put away. Electronics: capacitors age and connector contacts oxidise, particularly in a damp cupboard or a garage. Notice what is not on that list — the recorded data. A dormant drive that will not start is a starting problem, and starting problems are the recoverable kind.
Why a small legacy drive is a hopeful patient: counter-intuitively, age helps here. A 160GB drive of that generation has low-density platters, fewer heads and a simpler mechanism than a modern multi-terabyte drive, which makes it more tolerant of imperfect handling and easier to image completely. Its total capacity is smaller than a single modern photograph library, so a full image is quick. And because it stopped working before it was put away, it has spent those years not being made worse.
How his question gets answered before he commits: this is the part worth knowing, because it costs nothing. The assessment establishes two things: whether the drive can be brought to a state where it reads, and — if it can — what is on it. That means a write-blocked read and a file listing: folder structure, file names, types, dates and sizes, compiled into a summary he can actually look at. At that point his real question is answered. If the drive turns out to hold a decade-old software installer and some duplicated music, he can walk away having spent nothing. If it holds photographs of people who are no longer here, he decides with that in front of him rather than guessing. Either way the sequence is the right way round: find out, then choose. Take some comfort from the physics, though: recorded data on platters is stable for decades, and small older drives are mechanically simpler and easier to image completely than modern high-density ones. The thing that aged is the motor and the electronics, not your photographs.
