The decode: what stuck heads are, why power is the enemy, and repair versus recovery
What his diagnosis describes: when a drive powers down properly, the heads retract to a parking position clear of the data surfaces. If that retraction fails — a sudden power loss, a knock, a mechanism at the end of its life — the heads can be left resting directly on a platter, where they adhere. The characteristic result is a drive that either does nothing at all, or makes a brief attempt and stops: the motor trying to turn a platter stack that a stuck head is holding still. Owners describe it as a click, a buzz, a beep, or simply silence. If that is what he has, his instinct is right, and it is a mechanically ordinary fault with a well-established road.
Why powering it again is the only real danger: here is the part that decides outcomes. A stuck head sitting on a stationary platter has damaged nothing.
