Clicking Hard Drive: Broken Is Not the Same as Lost
Her enquiry did the testing properly and then asked the question with one assumption buried in it. "The hard drive is making a clicking sound and won't connect to the computer. We have tried using a different USB lead and computer and it still won't work. If the hard drive is broken, we need all the photos and videos restored off of the hard drive please." That conditional is worth examining, because it carries a belief almost everybody holds and almost nobody states: that broken and unrecoverable are the same word. In this trade they are close to opposites. A mechanically broken drive is the ordinary case, not the hopeless one — it is the situation with the most established route, the most mature equipment, and among the better success rates. The drives that genuinely defeat recovery are usually not the broken ones.

The decode: why broken is the workable case
What clicking is: the drive is trying to position its heads and failing to confirm where they are. Positioning depends on reading servo patterns written on the platters; when the heads cannot read them, the drive retracts and tries again, and that cycle is the click. It nearly always means the head assembly has failed — and that is a component failure. The heads are the part that reads the data; they are not the part that holds it.
Why that distinction is the whole answer to her question: her photographs are recorded as magnetic patterns on the platters, and a failed head assembly does not touch them. The drive has lost the ability to read what it still physically holds. Replacing the heads with matched donor parts restores that ability, and the data is then read normally. Which is why "broken" in the mechanical sense is a routine job with well-understood equipment behind it, rather than the end of the road she is bracing for.
What genuinely does defeat recovery: worth naming, so the contrast is clear. Physical destruction of the magnetic layer, where heads have contacted the platters long enough to score the surface — that is removed data, and nothing restores it. Encryption without a key. Data overwritten by something else. Those are the real limits, and none of them is what "broken" usually means when an owner says it.
The variable she still controls: and it is the one that connects the two categories above. Every time a clicking drive is powered, damaged heads travel across the surfaces holding her photographs. That is the mechanism by which a recoverable broken drive becomes an unrecoverable destroyed one.
