Hard Drive Won't Spin Up: Recovery on a Tight Budget
His enquiry said the thing people usually leave out, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales response. A Seagate FireCuda 2TB 2.5-inch drive that "has stopped working and can't be recognised from my computer. I've tried reconnecting it multiple times but the drive won't even turn. I have a feeling it is dead and the data on it is essential for my studies. I would like to get my data back, but I don't have much money to spend if it's going to cost a lot." Three things to give him. The decode of "won't even turn", which has four possible causes with very different price tags. A technical wrinkle specific to his drive that most owners never hear about. And, most usefully, the honest answer to the budget question: finding out what it needs costs nothing and risks nothing — and there are legitimate ways to reduce the figure that nobody tends to mention.

The decode: four reasons a drive won't turn, a hybrid wrinkle, and the budget answer
Four causes, two of them cheap: "won't even turn" narrows things usefully. The power path — a bad cable, port or enclosure supply — is the cheapest possible answer and is checked first. The drive's own board: a failed component, sometimes a protective one that died to save everything behind it; board-level work, no opening, no donor platters. A seized spindle: bearings that will not turn, which requires the drive to be opened. Adhered heads: the assembly resting on the platter surface and holding it still, which also requires opening. Two of the four are resolved with the drive sealed, and those are materially less expensive. Which is why his repeated reconnection attempts are worth flagging gently: if the cause is adhered heads, each attempt strains a motor against a stuck stack, and that is the one path that can turn a cheaper job into a dearer one.
The hybrid wrinkle: his drive is not an ordinary hard disk. This line pairs conventional platters with an integrated flash cache — a small amount of solid-state memory the drive uses to hold frequently or recently accessed data. For recovery that has a real consequence: some of his most recent writes may exist in the flash rather than on the platters, and a complete recovery has to account for both. It also means the drive's own controller is doing more bookkeeping than a plain disk does, so its management data matters more. None of that makes the job harder in principle — it simply means "recovered the platters" is not automatically the same as "recovered everything", and a bench that does not know the architecture may not look for the difference.
The budget answer, honestly: the important part. He does not have to gamble to find out. The assessment is free — the failure point identified, the route established, the realistic outcome stated — and it produces one fixed figure in writing before he commits to anything. If the figure is more than he can pay, he owes nothing, and the drive comes back. That alone removes the risk from asking. Three further things worth knowing. Keep the drive: magnetic data does not decay on a shelf, so an unaffordable recovery today can happen next year or after graduation, and nothing is lost by waiting. Don't let it be experimented on cheaply: the one thing that genuinely destroys value is a well-meant attempt by someone without the equipment, because it can convert an affordable fault into an unaffordable one. And scope is a lever: if the fault allows it, recovering a defined, prioritised set — the dissertation, the coursework folder, one module's work — rather than the entire two terabytes can reduce the work involved. That option is not always available, but it is worth asking for by name, and it is rarely offered unprompted.
On the bench
