Reading a Diagnostic Report: What Those Phrases Mean

Her enquiry arrived with a diagnosis already attached, quoted from a report she had been given. A WD drive dropped a few years ago, with two findings: "Media Corruption — the hard disk drive has suffered media corruption which has led to inaccessible sectors and unreadable areas of the device. This can cause the data to be unreadable, but also low-level information that is critical to the basic operation of the hard drive is damaged." And: "Internal Mechanical Failure — there is a failure of any mechanical component contained within the storage device." She would like a quote. Both phrases are real terms describing real things, and both are also categories rather than findings — the second especially, since "a failure of any mechanical component" is a definition of the category it names. This page translates them, and sets out what a report should tell an owner instead.

The decode: what each phrase means, and what is missing from both

"Media corruption — inaccessible sectors and unreadable areas": this describes surface degradation. Regions of the platters no longer return data reliably, either because the magnetic layer has been damaged or because the heads can no longer read those areas. On a drive that was dropped, that is exactly what an impact causes. The important addition is the second sentence: low-level information critical to the basic operation of the drive is damaged. That refers to the service area — the reserved region holding the drive's firmware modules, defect maps and head calibration. Degradation reaching that region is why the drive cannot start properly at all, as opposed to merely losing some files. So the phrase does carry real information, and it is more serious than "some bad sectors".

"Internal mechanical failure — a failure of any mechanical component": this one is a category with the definition attached, and it tells her almost nothing she did not know. The mechanical components are the head assembly, the actuator that moves it, and the spindle motor with its bearings — and those are three different jobs at three different prices. Failed heads are routine work with matched donor parts. A damaged actuator is more involved. A seized spindle means transferring the platters into a donor chassis, which is among the most delicate procedures in the trade with honestly variable odds. Being told "a mechanical component has failed" does not distinguish between them, and she cannot make a decision on it.

What a useful report tells you: four things, and she is entitled to ask for all of them. Which component has failed, named specifically. How much surface is affected — a proportion rather than an adjective, because a head crash rarely destroys a whole platter and the intact fraction is the whole question. Whether the service area is readable, since that determines whether the drive can be brought to a state where it addresses its own media. And what route is proposed, with its realistic outcome stated. A report that gives categories rather than specifics is not necessarily dishonest — generic language is often used to summarise for non-technical readers — but it is not enough to buy from, and asking for the detail behind it is entirely reasonable.

The detail her report omits entirely: the drop was a few years ago, and the drive has been sitting since. Long dormancy stiffens bearings and can allow heads to adhere to platters, which means the condition today may differ from the condition when it was assessed. That is worth establishing fresh rather than assuming the old report still describes the drive.

The report was treated as background rather than as a finding, and the drive was assessed independently before any figure was discussed. Under the laminar flow bench the surfaces were inspected directly — the affected area located and measured against the intact area, converting "unreadable areas" into a proportion — and the head assembly examined to identify which mechanical component had actually failed.
