Drive Left With a Lab: What Happens to It?

That is the happiest enquiry this trade receives — somebody found their backup — and it raises a question every customer should ask before handing a drive to anyone: what happens to it if I never come back? The decode: custody, retention, and disposal
Where a drive sits while it is with a lab: a device under assessment is logged against a reference on arrival — which is what her receipt number is for — and held in secure storage rather than on an open bench. That log records when it arrived, who accepted it, what was done and when, so a device can always be accounted for. It matters more than it sounds: a laboratory that cannot immediately say where a specific drive is, months later, is telling you something about how it handles everything else.
