Dog Chewed the SD Card: Bring Every Piece

His enquiry was cheerful about a small disaster. "My dog has chewed my camera SD card and my computer no longer can read it. What would it cost for me to drop it in and for you to see if any data could be recovered?" The answer is more hopeful than the state of the card will look, and it turns on a single question that decides everything: did the damage reach the memory die? Because a memory card is not a delicate assembly of small parts that can be individually broken — it is a solid moulded block, and the thing that holds the photographs is a tiny piece of silicon set inside it. Teeth can crush the body, deform the contacts and crack the resin around that silicon without ever touching the silicon itself. When that is the case, the card can be read despite looking beyond hope.

The decode: what chewing damages, and the one question that matters

What a card actually is: a moulded block of resin with a memory die, a small controller and fine internal traces set inside it, and gold contacts at one edge. There are no moving parts and nothing to come loose. That construction is the reason chewed cards are frequently recoverable: the damage a dog inflicts is crushing and tearing at the body, and the body is packaging rather than storage.

The three things teeth usually damage: the contacts, which can be scratched, deformed or torn away, leaving a card that no reader can talk to; the internal traces, which run close to the surface and are severed by a crack across the body, exactly as in a fractured card; and the resin body itself, which may be split, compressed or partly missing. All three are damage to the route in, not to the archive — and all three are bypassed by reading the memory through the internal technological pads that sit beneath the surface, behind the broken traces and independent of the external contacts.

The question that decides it: whether a fracture has propagated through the memory die. That die is small — a few millimetres — and sits in a defined position within the card, so a great deal of visible carnage can miss it entirely. Where it is intact, the outlook is good regardless of how the card looks. Where a crack has crossed it, the fault is in the storage itself and the honest answer may be partial recovery or none. That assessment is made under magnification before any figure is quoted, so nobody pays to discover it.

What to do with a chewed card: practical, and it matters. Do not insert it into a reader — deformed contacts can damage the reader and, worse, can short in ways that harm the card's remaining electronics. Do not clean it, and particularly do not run it under a tap; saliva is not the problem, and moisture introduced into a cracked body is. Do not try to flatten or straighten it, which propagates cracks. And bring every piece: if the card has broken, the fragments matter, because the die may be in one of them and reconstruction sometimes needs more of the body than expected. A sealed bag with all of it in, delivered in person, is exactly right.

On the bench

The card was assessed before anything was attempted: examined under magnification to map the fractures and, critically, to establish whether any of them crossed the position of the memory die. They did not. The monolith was then prepared and its internal technological pads exposed and probed on the PC-3000 Flash Spider Board, with the pinout confirmed against the Rusolut VNR database — the ruined contacts and severed traces left entirely out of the process. The raw memory read out, and reconstruction ran the full pipeline of XOR descrambling, ECC correction and translation rebuild until the card's filesystem stood up. The photographs were extracted, validated by rendering, and delivered on fresh media.

The outcome

The photographs recovered through the card's internal pads despite the destruction of its contacts and body, validated and delivered. Free assessment, one fixed written figure including VAT, 50% of parts and labour upfront with the balance only on successful recovery. Card chewed, crushed or broken

Don't put it in a reader. Deformed or torn contacts can damage the reader and can short in ways that harm what's left of the card's electronics, and one insertion is enough. Don't wash it either — the saliva isn't the problem, and introducing water into a cracked body is. Don't try to flatten, straighten or tape it, because that propagates cracks through the resin and potentially through the memory die itself, which is the one part you need intact. Put everything in a sealed bag, including every fragment however small, and keep it flat. Then take some encouragement: a card is a moulded block whose photographs live on a few millimetres of silicon inside it, so crushed contacts and a wrecked body are damage to the way in rather than to your pictures — and the memory can be read through internal pads that don't use the contacts at all.
