Dashcam SD Card: Removed Without Ejecting
His enquiry contained a mistake almost everyone makes and a stake that makes it matter more than usual. "I accidentally lost the data on a dashcam SD card by removing it from the laptop without unmounting it. Needed the footage for an insurance claim." Two things follow from that sentence, and the second is more urgent than the recovery. What unsafe removal actually does is interrupt the computer mid-write, leaving the card's filing structure inconsistent — which is why the data appears to be gone while remaining physically present. And because the footage is wanted for a claim, there is a second consideration that ordinary recoveries do not carry: how the card is handled from here affects whether what comes back can be relied upon.

The decode: what unmounting does, and why the camera is now the danger
What "safely remove" actually does: it is not a formality and it is not the computer being cautious on your behalf. Operating systems hold recent writes in memory and commit them to the device in batches, because writing in bulk is far faster than writing continuously. Ejecting tells the system to flush everything still held in memory, finish any operation in progress, and close the filing structure cleanly. Pull the card out before that happens and the structure is left mid-update: entries partly written, allocation records disagreeing, and a journal describing a transaction that never completed. The result is a card whose footage is entirely present and whose catalogue can no longer be parsed — which is exactly what "lost the data" looks like from outside.
Why the footage is almost certainly still there: nothing in that sequence erases video. Interrupted writes damage the small records that describe where files live; the files themselves are large, contiguous and untouched. Reconstruction rebuilds those records on an image, and where the damage is beyond repair the clips are identified directly by their own internal signatures and reassembled with their embedded timestamps intact — which, for a claim, is the part that matters.
Why the card must not go back in the dashcam: the most important instruction here, and the one people get wrong while trying to help themselves. A dashcam records in a continuous loop. Put the card back in and power the vehicle, and the camera will begin writing new footage over free space — and after an interrupted write, the space holding his incident footage may well be marked free. Minutes of engine running could overwrite the very clip the claim depends on. It also risks the camera offering to format or repair a card it cannot read. The card stays out of the vehicle entirely.
The evidential dimension: because this supports a claim, handling matters as much as technique. The original card is never written to — everything is done on a write-blocked image, so the source remains exactly as received. Recovered clips are validated by playback and reported with their embedded capture times rather than renamed or re-encoded, and the findings are documented in writing: what was recovered, what was not, and from where. Insurers and their engineers ask reasonable questions about provenance, and a recovery that cannot answer them is worth less than one that can.
