USB Not Recognised: When a TV Has Been Writing to It
His enquiry described a routine that most people would consider entirely harmless, and it is the routine that explains the fault. A USB stick holding video: "it is often simply plugged in and out of a TV for direct access and playing. This has since stopped working. The drive when plugged into a laptop is registered and appears as available, however it does not allow access to the drive or opening of the files." Two things worth separating. And the habit he describes almost in passing is the likeliest cause, because a television is not the passive playback device people assume. The decode: what a TV actually does to a stick, and what his laptop is telling him
Why the television is the suspect: people picture a TV reading a stick the way a projector reads a slide — passively, changing nothing. It does not.
