Fifteen-Year-Old MacBook Pro That Will Not Boot

His enquiry was matter-of-fact and slightly rueful. "I've got a 15-year-old MacBook Pro that has died. Cannot get it to reboot in safe or recovery mode. Need to see if the hard drive data can be recovered. Data was not backed up on the cloud. Sadly." The rueful part is fair, but the age he mentions almost apologetically is in fact the single most helpful fact in the enquiry. A Mac of that vintage predates every complication that makes modern Mac recovery difficult: it contains an ordinary removable hard drive, held in by a few screws, readable on any standard connection, with no proprietary module, no soldered storage and no encryption tied to the machine. Whatever has killed the computer, the data is in the most accessible form Apple has ever shipped.

The decode: why age helps, and what safe mode failing tells us

What his generation of machine contains: a standard 2.5-inch hard drive on an ordinary connection — the same kind of drive fitted to Windows laptops of the period. It removes with a screwdriver, connects to any adapter or dock, and presents its contents like any other disk. Compare that with the machines elsewhere in this volume: proprietary blade modules requiring generation-matched interfaces, storage soldered to logic boards, and encryption keys held in security chips that make the machine itself the only route to its own data. His Mac has none of those. Whatever is wrong with the computer becomes irrelevant the moment the drive is out.

What his testing established: failing to start in safe mode and recovery mode is a more thorough elimination than it sounds. Safe mode loads a minimal system, so failing there rules out most software conflicts and third-party additions. Recovery mode runs from a separate partition on the drive itself, so failing there points either at hardware, or at a drive that can no longer serve even that. Between them they narrow the fault to the machine's hardware or the drive — and the good news is that his next step is the same either way.

The two possibilities, and why both are workable: if the machine has died — power supply, logic board, display chain, any of the ordinary failures of a fifteen-year-old computer — then the drive is healthy and this is a straightforward read. If the drive has failed, it is a conventional hard drive of a well-supported generation, which is the most familiar patient in this trade, with mature routes for every fault it can present. Neither outcome is bad, and which applies is established free of charge.

One thing worth knowing about the age: a drive of that vintage that has been sitting unused may show dormancy effects — stiffened bearings, or heads that adhered to the platters during storage. That makes the first power-up the moment that matters, and it should happen on equipment that can watch the drive's behaviour rather than inside another computer. It is also why fitting it into a working machine to "see if it reads" is the one shortcut worth avoiding.

On the bench

The drive came out of the chassis — a few screws, and the dead machine's role in the matter ended there. It was connected write-blocked on native equipment rather than inside a working computer, so that nothing could be written to it whatever its condition proved to be, and the Atola Insight Forensic read its health and power-on behaviour directly, which on a drive of this age is the reading that decides everything. Where the condition warranted it, a complete image was taken on the PC-3000 Express under Data Extractor before anything else was asked of it; the Mac volume was then read from the copy, its contents verified by opening, and delivered on fresh media he could use with a current machine.

Its age is working in your favour. If the drive has been sitting unused for a long time, treat its first power-up as the important moment: heads can adhere to the platters during storage, so resist fitting it into another computer to see whether it reads, since a booted system may also offer to initialise or repair a disk it cannot parse. Have it connected write-blocked and looked at first.
