Coffee Spilt on an M1 Mac: the Honest Position
Her enquiry was written for someone else's loss and showed she had already done the reading. "I accidentally spilt coffee on my husband's M1 Mac and it now won't start. His book that he was writing is on there and he didn't back it up. I know getting data off an M1 is challenging, but can you help save his book?" She is right that it is challenging, and she deserves the honest version rather than reassurance — this generation is the hardest class of machine in this archive. But before any of that, there is something more likely to save the manuscript than the bench is, and it costs nothing: a book being written is rarely only in one place, and the free avenues should be exhausted first, today, while the technical question is still being considered.

The decode: the free avenues, the honest position, and the clock
Where the book may already be: worth exhausting before anything else, because writers accumulate copies without realising. Word processors keep autosave and version histories in system locations separate from the document, so an earlier draft frequently survives independently. If iCloud Drive was enabled with Desktop and Documents syncing — which is the default on many setups — the file may be in the account right now, reachable from any browser, along with older versions and a recently-deleted area. Writers also email drafts to themselves, to a collaborator, or to a reader; they export to PDF for printing; they paste sections into notes. None of that requires the machine, all of it can be checked this afternoon from a borrowed computer, and any of it may end the problem. Given what is at stake, that check comes first.
The honest technical position: she is right about the difficulty and the reason is architectural. On Apple silicon the storage is soldered to the board and encrypted with keys held inside the processor's secure enclave. There is no module to remove; reading the memory packages directly returns ciphertext; and the keys never leave the chip. So the only route to the data runs through the machine — the board has to be repaired far enough to power up and unlock its own storage against his password. Where the liquid damaged power delivery and the storage and processor are clear of it, that is achievable. Where the damage has reached the storage packages or the enclave itself, the honest answer is that nothing can be done, because neither can be substituted: a replacement chip does not hold his keys.
Why the clock matters more here than anywhere else: liquid damage is progressive — residue keeps corroding traces and pads long after the machine feels dry, and faster if power is applied. On most devices that means diminishing odds. Here it means something starker: because the machine is the only key to its own contents, a board that becomes unrevivable takes the data with it. There is no fallback, no chip-off, no later attempt with better equipment. Days matter, and the temptation to keep trying the power button is the one to resist, since applying current to a corroded board is how the damage spreads.
On the bench

Spill on a recent Mac with something irreplaceable on it
Do two things today. First, hunt the free copies from any other computer — a document being actively written is rarely in only one place. Check the cloud account in a browser for the file, its version history and the recently-deleted area; check your word processor's autosave and recovery locations; and think about emailed drafts, exports to PDF, and sections pasted into notes or messages. Any one of those may end this at no cost. Second, stop pressing the power button. Liquid causes corrosion that continues long after the machine feels dry and accelerates when current flows, so each attempt both spreads the damage and risks the one route you have.
