Do memory cards expire? The honest answer a drawer full of old holidays deserves — the reformat error decoded years late, the flash-retention physics that make cards different from drives, and the photographs recovered while the charge still held
The enquiry was patient in the way only old losses are: "Some years ago I took holiday photos on my Kodak camera, using a Kodak memory card. Near the end of the holiday a message came up saying the card had an error and needed reformatting. I was then unable to retrieve any of the photos. Is this something you might be able to help with?" Two answers are owed, and the second is the one this archive hasn't yet written down. First, the error itself: a camera demanding a reformat is reporting structures it can't parse — the card's filing corrupted, the photographs behind it typically intact — the same decode this library gives every "you need to format this disk" message, and the reason the years-old refusal to reformat was exactly right. But second, the deeper question inside "some years ago": do memory cards expire on a shelf? And here honesty requires a different answer than the one this volume gave a drive in a drawer — because flash memory stores charge, not magnetism, and charge genuinely fades. Cards are not drives; the years cost them something real; and "sooner rather than later" is, for once, physics rather than salesmanship.

The decode: the error then, the physics since, and the honest urgency
What the camera meant, years ago: the mid-holiday message decodes exactly as this archive's card cases always decode it: "card error, needs reformatting" is the camera failing to parse the card's filing structures — a corruption event, often from an interrupted write or a marginal moment, tearing the catalogue while the photographs themselves sit unlisted behind it. Declining the reformat was the single best decision available, then and since: a reformat writes fresh, empty filing over the torn kind, converting a routine catalogue-rebuild into a needle hunt. The photos, as of that day, were almost certainly all still aboard.
Why cards are not drives — the retention physics: and now the question the years raise, answered honestly because this same volume answered it oppositely for a hard drive: magnetic recordings on platters are stable across shelf-years — but a memory card stores each bit as trapped electric charge in flash cells, and trapped charge leaks. Slowly — consumer cards are engineered to hold data for years unpowered, and a lightly-used holiday card starts from healthy cells — but genuinely, cumulatively, and faster on cells that were heavily worn. Over enough years, faded charge becomes read errors, then unreadable regions. So the honest position for his card: the photographs very likely remain substantially recoverable — light use and one-holiday wear favour him — but every further shelf-year is now an actual cost, not a neutral wait, and the recovery's first act is to bank everything readable immediately, errors managed, before the physics collects any more. "Sooner" is not urgency theatre here. It's electrons.
