His enquiry opened with a constraint — "I'm not available for phone calls between 8am and 6pm" — honoured to the letter, and proceeded with the discipline this archive banks every time it appears. The patient: an aging Hitachi USB external drive, no longer recognised anywhere. His elimination: different USB cables tried; the external power brick confirmed fine; Windows Disk Management searched — nothing; a Linux machine tried — still nothing. Then the two observations that carry the case: "there is a status light on the front which normally shows green when operating normally — it now displays red, which I'm assuming is the device's way of showing an error." The decode: the light, the spin, and the messenger problem

What the status light actually watches: the LED on an external enclosure is wired to the enclosure's electronics — the bridge board that translates between the USB port and the bare drive inside. Its green is not "your data is fine"; it is the bridge reporting "I have power, and the drive behind me answered my checks." Which makes its red unusually informative: a bridge that shows an error state is saying its conversation with the drive has failed — either because the bridge itself has died (aging enclosure electronics are a routine casualty), or because the drive spins but never reports ready (its own electronics or firmware stalling after spin-up, so the bridge waits for a greeting that never comes). His years of habitual green make the signal even cleaner: this isn't an ambiguous blink code but a device that has changed its testimony. He assumed it was the device's way of showing an error; it is precisely that — and it's the only component in the chain that was ever going to tell him.

Why every computer showed nothing: and the light explains the elimination's unanimous emptiness. A computer only learns a USB drive exists when the bridge presents it — and a bridge stuck in an error state presents nothing. Windows Disk Management empty, Linux empty: not two operating systems failing to read a disk, but two operating systems being told, truthfully, that no disk was on offer. His Linux cross-check was still excellent method — it eliminated the possibility of a Windows-side driver quirk and confirmed the silence lives in the hardware chain — and combined with the cable and power eliminations, his work left exactly one unexamined component: the enclosure itself. The audible spin completes the picture kindly: platters turning means the motor, the power path into the drive, and the drive's most basic startup all function. The fault sits after the spin — in the bridge, or in the drive's readiness — and both live one step past where any household test can reach.

If you can hear it spin, the motor and basic startup are fine, which narrows things further. Your eliminations are worth running — cables, power brick, a second computer or OS — but when they all come back empty, stop: don't open the enclosure yourself (warranty and connector damage lurk there), don't keep power-cycling it, and don't buy a replacement enclosure to "test" (mismatched bridges cause their own trouble). Have the drive connected natively on a bench, where the red light's question gets a measured answer.
