iPhone USB Flash Drive Not Working: the App Is Not the Storage
Her enquiry described the failure from inside the app it was reported by, which is where the useful distinction lies. "Would you be able to recover data from a USB flash drive and copy it to another USB stick? It stopped working and I can't open it in the app. It is a USB flash drive for iPhone." These dual-ended sticks — one connector for a phone, one standard USB connector for a computer — come with a companion application, and that application is how most owners ever interact with them. Which produces a very common and very fixable confusion: "I can't open it in the app" is a statement about the app, and it is not the same as the drive has failed. Sometimes it is the drive. The decode: what the app does, the free test, and the three possibilities
What the companion app actually is: a phone cannot browse arbitrary storage the way a computer can, so these drives ship with an application that handles the connection, presents the files, and manages copying to and from the phone. The important point is that the app is a viewer and transfer tool, not the place the data lives. The files sit on ordinary flash memory inside the stick, in a normal filesystem, arranged in folders. So an app that will not open the drive may be reporting a fault in the drive — or may itself have broken, lost permission, fallen out of step with a phone update, or simply be failing to talk to the connector.
The free test: and this is the whole reason to read this page before spending anything. Plug the standard USB end into a computer. That bypasses the phone, the connector used with the phone, and the app entirely, and asks the storage directly whether it is alive. If the drive appears and the folders open, nothing is wrong with the data at all — the fault is on the app-and-phone side, and her files can be copied off to another stick in minutes at no cost. It is remarkable how often that is the answer, and it is not the answer anyone gets by continuing to try the app.
If the computer sees nothing, three possibilities remain: the same three that apply to any flash device, in order of hopefulness. The connector or its solder joints — dual-ended drives are handled constantly, plugged into a phone in a pocket, levered sideways, and their joints crack; a mechanical repair follows and the memory is untouched. The controller — the chip managing the memory has failed, so nothing enumerates; the memory behind it is normally intact and is read directly at chip level. Or the NAND itself, which is rarer and is where honest limits apply.
Her actual request, answered: she asked for the data recovered and copied to another USB stick, which is exactly right and worth confirming as standard practice. Recovered data never goes back onto the device it came from — it is delivered on separate verified media, and if she prefers a plain USB stick to an external drive, that is simply what it is delivered on. She should also be told the useful part for afterwards: once the files are back, they belong somewhere with a copy, because a stick that lives in a pocket attached to a phone is transport, not storage.
On the bench
