Dead SSD: Recover Before You Claim the Replacement

His enquiry set out both halves of the problem in one sentence, and the order he does them in decides the outcome. A SanDisk SSD holding his photographs and video: "it is dead and I need to send it for a replacement, but I need to recover nearly 1.2TB of data — JPEG and MOV." Those two intentions are in direct competition, and only one of them can go first. A warranty replacement is not a repair: the original drive goes away permanently and an empty one arrives. Manufacturers are explicit that the warranty covers the hardware and not its contents, and they are not being unreasonable about it — it simply means that once the drive is posted, the question of his photographs is closed. The decode: the sequence, the honest SSD picture, and the delivery question

Why recovery must come first: a warranty claim sends the drive to the manufacturer, where it is refurbished or destroyed; the replacement is a different, empty unit. There is no version in which the contents travel with it. The good news is that the two goals are not really in conflict, only in sequence — warranties do not expire in the time a recovery takes, and nothing about attempting a recovery first prevents claiming afterwards. One caveat worth knowing in advance: if the recovery requires the drive's casing to be opened, that generally voids the warranty on that unit. For most people holding a terabyte of irreplaceable photographs against the price of a replacement drive, that is not a difficult decision — but it should be made knowingly rather than discovered.

The honest SSD picture: he deserves the same straight account this archive gives everyone on solid-state work, because it differs from hard drive recovery in one important respect. On a memory card or USB stick, a dead controller is routinely bypassed by reading the memory chips directly. On a modern SSD that fallback is far harder and often unavailable: data is spread across many memory packages in complex interleaved patterns, the mapping that reassembles it is held by the controller rather than being reconstructible from the flash alone, and many drives encrypt internally with keys the controller holds. So the realistic route runs through the controller rather than around it — vendor-specific technological and safe modes that can bring up a drive whose normal start-up fails, allowing the firmware area to be repaired and the drive imaged. That works often enough to be well worth attempting, and when it does the recovery is complete. When it does not, that is a genuine limit and it is stated plainly rather than sold around.

What his 1.2TB means practically: two things. Delivery media needs to be comfortably larger than the source — formatted capacity is less than the label suggests, and a recovery can yield more than the original where earlier versions and duplicates surface. And validation at that scale means rendering and playing rather than counting: a truncated JPEG or a partial MOV looks entirely healthy in a file listing, and on an archive this size the difference only becomes apparent months later.

On the bench

And set expectations honestly for SSDs — reading the memory chips directly isn't the reliable fallback it is on cards and sticks, because the address mapping and often the encryption keys live inside the controller, so the realistic route is controller-level access, which frequently works and sometimes genuinely cannot.
