The enquiry was as terse as a brief can be and still complete: "A Seagate 2TB disk has become physically damaged and cannot connect to a PC. I wish to try to recover the data — mainly photographs." Everything a recovery needs is in those lines except the one thing the owner cannot supply: which physical damage — because "physically damaged and cannot connect" is an intake category, not a diagnosis, spanning at least four different injuries with four different roads: a snapped or crushed connector (the commonest, and the most benign); a cracked or burnt circuit board; a damaged enclosure around a healthy drive; or an impact that reached the mechanism itself. The decode: four doorways, one triage

Doorway one — the connector: the most frequent meaning of "damaged and cannot connect" is the most literal: the socket itself — snapped by a sideways cable, crushed in a bag, worked loose over years — so the drive is a healthy building with a broken doorknob.
