The field guide to a failing drive's sounds: click, beep, buzz, scrape, squeal, silence — what each one means, which ones mean stop now, and how "not good noises" became a measured diagnosis and a finished recovery

Some enquiries are three lines because three lines is honestly all an owner can say: "HDD won't be recognised anymore. Also tried in a dock with no luck. Making not good noises." No apology needed — nobody is trained to name the sounds a dying drive makes, and "not good" is a truthful field report. But the sounds do have names, and each maps to specific machinery in specific trouble — so this page gives the enquiry the answer it deserves twice over: the recovery of his drive, and the field guide this archive has been assembling case by case for six hundred entries — the taxonomy of failing-drive noises, what each means, and which ones are the drive telling you to stop immediately. The decode: the taxonomy — six sounds and what they mean

The rhythmic click — tick… tick… tick, often in sets, sometimes with a pause and a retry: the heads sweeping for calibration tracks they can no longer read, failing, retracting, trying again. Failed or failing heads, or damage where they calibrate. The archive's most common sound, and its firmest stop-signal: every click cycle is the mechanism rehearsing its failure over your data.

The beep — a small electronic-sounding tone on power: usually not a speaker at all (drives don't have one) but the motor singing — energised, straining against platters it cannot turn. Seized spindle or stuck heads holding the platters still; the beep is the sound of force being applied to something that must never be forced. Stop-signal at maximum: continued power-ups grind the very surfaces the heads are stuck to.

The buzz or juddering hum — a rough, laboured spin-up that never smooths: motor or bearing distress, the platters turning but badly. Less common alone; often the prelude to the beep.

The scrape or grind — the sound owners describe with a wince: something rubbing at speed. The gravest entry in the guide — potential head-to-platter contact, machinery touching the recording surfaces themselves. Zero further seconds of power are affordable; this is the one sound where "I'll just check once more" costs data by the second.

The squeal — thin, high, continuous: bearing or contact friction at speed; treat as the scrape's cousin and cut power the same way.

The silence — no spin at all (electronics/power territory, often the most benign) or, distinctly, a smooth spin with no recognition (firmware territory, as this volume's neighbouring case decodes). Silence is a chapter of its own; the point of listing it here is the contrast — absence of noise points above the mechanics, presence of these noises points into them.

How the bench hears: an owner's ear triages; the bench measures. Drive making noises you can't name

Trust the instinct before the vocabulary: "not good noises" from a drive is a complete and sufficient diagnosis for the only decision that matters — power off now, and don't power on again. Don't replay the sound for family members, don't record it "one more time," don't try another dock once one has acquitted the enclosure: every audition runs failing machinery over your only copy, and the scraping kinds cost data by the second. Note roughly what you heard if you can (clicking, beeping, grinding — it helps triage) but don't worry if you can't; the bench reads sound and current together on a single controlled power-up and names the fault in seconds. Bring the drive, not a recording. It only needs to speak once more, and to the right instruments.
