His enquiry was the shortest in this volume, and it is worth a page precisely because of that. In full: "USB Kingston 128GB not showing up on MacBook Pro." That is a perfectly reasonable way to ask for help, and it is also a description that fits at least five different faults with five different prices. Rather than guessing, this page does the thing that would have been most useful to him: it sets out the three levels at which a Mac can see a device — because which level his stick reaches narrows the fault dramatically — and the five questions whose answers turn a one-line enquiry into an actual diagnosis. All of them are free, take a few minutes, and are worth having ready before contacting anyone about any storage device.

The decode: the three levels, and the five questions

Level one — System Information. The deepest view a Mac offers without special tools: it lists devices connected to the USB bus, whether or not they carry usable data. If the stick appears here, it is electrically alive and its controller is conducting the introduction — which means the fault lies further up, in the partition or filesystem, and the outlook is good. If it does not appear here, the controller is not answering and the road is chip-level.

Level two — Disk Utility. Shows storage devices the system recognises as disks. A stick that appears in System Information but not in Disk Utility, or that appears in Disk Utility as an unformatted or unreadable device, has partition-level damage. Worth noting: Disk Utility hides certain items unless Show All Devices is enabled in its View menu, and that single setting has ended a good number of panics.

Level three — Finder. The shallowest view, and the one everybody checks. Finder shows mounted volumes it is configured to display, so a device can be entirely healthy and still not appear here — if its filesystem cannot be mounted, or if external disks are switched off in Finder's own preferences. "Not showing up" almost always means "not in Finder", which is the least informative of the three.

The five questions: and these are what a bench actually wants to know. Does it appear in System Information or Disk Utility? — the single most valuable answer, as above. Does it light up, and does the Mac make a sound or show any message on connection? Does it behave the same on a second computer, ideally not a Mac? — which separates the device from the host. What was the last thing that happened to it — removed without ejecting, dropped, left in a pocket, used on an unfamiliar machine? And what is on it that matters, because a defined priority changes how a partial result is handled. Five answers, no cost, and between them they usually narrow a one-line enquiry to a single fault class.

What not to do while establishing them: the checks are all read-only and safe, with two exceptions to avoid: do not let Disk Utility run First Aid or erase anything, and decline any prompt offering to initialise or repair the disk. Looking is free; fixing is where damage happens.

On the bench

The first job was the one his enquiry had left open: establishing which of the three levels the stick reached. That single finding set the route. Where the device enumerated, it was imaged write-blocked behind the DeepSpar USB Stabilizer 10Gb and its partition and filesystem structures rebuilt on the copy, which returns the folder tree with names intact. Where it did not, the chip-level road ran on the PC-3000 Flash with pinout confirmation from the Rusolut VNR database, reading the memory past the controller and reconstructing the filesystem from the raw dump. Either way the contents were verified by opening and delivered on fresh media, and the finding was explained in the terms his own next enquiry would benefit from.

Storage device that will not show up on a Mac

Check all three levels before concluding anything, because Finder is the least informative of them. Open System Information and look at the USB section: if your device is listed there, it's electrically alive and the problem is the partition or filesystem, which is good news. Then open Disk Utility and enable Show All Devices in the View menu — devices are hidden without it, and that setting alone resolves a fair number of scares. Finder only displays volumes that mounted successfully and that its preferences allow it to show. While you're looking, don't let Disk Utility run First Aid, don't erase anything, and decline any prompt to initialise or repair.
