SD Card Formatted Then Recorded Over: What Survives

His enquiry was short, honest about the mistake, and contained the one detail that governs the outcome. "I have an SD card which was sadly formatted by mistake on a camera and re-recorded later. Will you be able to recover the video files?" Two events, and they are not equally serious. The format is the recoverable one — on a camera it almost always clears the index while leaving the footage physically intact. The re-recording is the one that costs, because new video is written into the space the format marked as free, and whatever it landed on is gone for good. So the honest answer is neither yes nor no: it is everything outside the second recording's footprint, and how much that is depends entirely on how much was shot afterwards.

The decode: why the format is survivable and the re-recording is not

What an in-camera format does: far less than the word implies. A camera formatting a card performs a quick format: it writes a fresh, empty filing structure and marks the whole data area as available. It does not erase the contents. Every frame of the original footage remains physically written exactly where it was, unlisted rather than deleted. That is why a formatted card that has been left alone is one of the most recoverable situations there is — the footage is identified directly by its own internal signatures and reassembled without any catalogue at all.

Why the second recording is different: once the card believes itself empty, the camera writes new video into that free space — and writing is the one operation that genuinely destroys. New footage physically replaces whatever occupied those sectors, and replaced data cannot be read back by any technique, at any price, by anyone. So the recovery divides cleanly into two territories: the regions the later recording touched, which are lost, and everything else, which is usually intact.

What decides how much survives: the proportion, and it is worth being concrete because owners consistently assume the worst. Cameras generally write forward into free space rather than scattering, so a short second session on a large card typically consumes a contiguous band near the beginning and leaves the majority of the original material untouched. A card that was filled again from end to end is a different and much poorer prospect. The determining figures are therefore how large the card is and how much was recorded after the format — and those are established by mapping the overwrite on an image rather than by guessing.

Why video is the good case here: the material helps him. Video files are large, written in long contiguous runs and carry strong internal signatures at their start, so surviving footage can be identified and reassembled even though the index describing it is gone. Filenames will not come back — those lived in the structure the format cleared — but the clips themselves generally will, ordered by the capture times recorded inside them.

The one instruction that still matters: the card must not be used again. Every further recording extends the footprint and permanently removes more of what remains. It comes out of the camera now and stays out.

On the bench

The card was imaged write-blocked behind the DeepSpar USB Stabilizer 10Gb, freezing what remained before anything else. On the image the overwrite footprint was mapped first — establishing precisely which regions the later recording had claimed and which were untouched, so that expectations rested on measurement rather than hope. Format-aware carving then recovered the original clips from the surviving territory by their internal structure, reassembling fragments in order and rebuilding playable containers with reconstructed indexes. Every clip was validated by playing it end to end, ordered by embedded capture time, and delivered with the lost regions listed by position rather than described in general terms.

The outcome

The original footage recovered from outside the overwrite footprint, validated by playback and delivered with the losses mapped precisely. Recovery of deleted or overwritten data from memory cards and USB sticks is charged at a flat figure, payable upfront. The decode, for anyone who formatted a card and then used it again: the format is the survivable event, because an in-camera format clears the index and leaves the footage physically intact; the later recording is the one that costs, since new video physically replaces what was there and nothing recovers replaced data; how much survives depends on how much was shot afterwards relative to the card's size, and cameras usually write forward, so a short second session often leaves the majority intact; and the card must come out now, because every further recording takes more.

Formatted a card and then kept shooting

Take the card out of the camera now and don't put it back — that single step stops the damage where it is. Understand which of the two events actually hurt you: the format almost certainly cleared only the index and left your footage physically on the card, while the later recording physically replaced whatever it landed on, and replaced data is gone permanently. So the realistic outcome is everything outside that second session's footprint, which on a large card after a short shoot is usually most of it. Don't try recovery software on the card and don't write anything to it. Expect filenames to be lost, since those lived in the structure the format cleared, but expect the clips themselves to come back ordered by their embedded capture times. And ask for the losses to be mapped by position rather than described vaguely.
